One doesn't need to be an engineer to see this dam is in trouble.

I had a college roommate from Old Fort. There are barely discernible remains of a very early Spanish fort nearby. The town has a fountain with a funky sort of naive style stone sculpture in the middle of a fountain in the square, it’s an artesian well. Pretty area, I’m sorry for their difficulties. Flooding in heavy rains has always been a problem in the southern Appalachians. Not as bad now as it was prior to all the watersheds and flood control dams though, one of which was Lake Tahoma.

I’m seeing facade damage on the upper far bank. Was the dirt from the bank holding that cement work up? Not sure how mud and rock sliding down a hill in itself caused that. Probably a simple answer for this non Engineer.

To my knowledge that dam is largely quarried stone so that may be a factor. It’s pretty old, WPA era as far as I know. Last major flooding they had was due to back to back hurricane remnants coming inland, Fran and Ivan, and even that didn’t cause evacuations due to fear of the dam failing.

Hopefully, the dam will survive this crisis, and be refurbished. Beautiful area.

Old Fort is right at the bottom of one of the steepest grades on I-40, they get a lot of runoff down the mountain.

I’m confused. This is fake news, so it didn’t happen? If it didn’t happen, why did you post it, leading people to believe it did?

One of the most fun things you can do on an interstate is get at the top of that grade coming from Asheville and then take the foot off the gas. Need to keep one hovering over the breaks of course.

Not just a thrill ride but it saves some fuel.

Not as thrilling as it used to be. I’ve been passed by semis with their brakes on fire many times, in years past. That grade is known collectively as “Black Mountain” although that’s really just the name of the town at the top. I-40 has been improved considerably since the early 80’s when the big sand barrier runaway truck ramps actually saw frequent use.

Spent a lot of my summers in Old Fort, Marion, and Glenwood. My Father was born in Old Fort. My uncle was postmaster and mayor of Old Fort. Once, my twin brother and were goofing off so much that our Uncle called his friend, Officer Bill, to come over to his house by the high school. He put us in the back of the squad car and took us to jail for a couple of hours. It was an eye-opening experience. Dad was in on the arrest, too.

Got stuck in a parking lot traffic jam going down that mountain many years ago. A truck had overturned and blocked all lanes.

People were out of their cars and taking in the views.

My then 14 year old son rode his skateboard for about a mile down the mountain and hiked back up.

I had the local radar dialed in last night and was watching the system as it moved over this area. It was about 5-10 miles wide and 40+- miles long moving north and dropping massive rain for a long period of time.

Craziest thing I ever experienced on that grade was zero visibility during “thunder snow” and my passengers having to walk in front of the car to tell me where the lines were. Lightning in that was like camera flashes, very blinding and couldn’t see anyway. Afraid to stop completely for fear of getting rear ended.

Google is your friend. You can verify there, that this report is factual.

NBC built their reputation for fake news by providing false narratives for many years. They did not report items that did not happen as real news. They simply inserted their narrative into every single story, selectively covering multiple times, favorable stories, while neglecting to report ever more important stories which were counter to their narrative.

If you have any trouble discerning truth from fiction, you had best not watch any of the fake news networks, also known as the mainstream media.

NBC and fake news just go together, just like bread and butter.
