RALEIGH Amazon is still considering the Triangle for its huge HQ2 project, and downtown Raleigh is where the ecommerce giant is most likely to build what would be a massive complex if North Carolinas capital is the winner, according to sources.
Several of the same sources also note that an announcement of Apples selection for a new campus is imminent.
North Carolina has been aggressively pursuing both economic development projects which promise billions of dollars in investments and as many as 60,000 jobs.
Winning the Apple project does not preclude the Triangle from being selected by Amazon, sources say.
The people familiar with the Apple and Amazon deal negotiations interviewed for this story insisted upon not being identified due to non-disclosure agreements or the fact they have not been authorized to discuss details of the projects.
Amazon has announced plans for a $5 billion investment that the Internet giant has said would create some 50,000 jobs over a decade-long process. The Triangle is one of the 20 finalists for that second headquarters announced by Amazon earlier this year. And numerous people say that there has been no indication that Amazon has dropped the Triangle from its shopping list.
In fact, a source said that a meeting between N.C. officials and Apple went much better than anyone expected. Amazon recently completed tours of each metro area listed as a finalist.
One Triangle developer pointed out that Amazon is expected to make a cut from 20 to a smaller list of finalists. Amazon has said its final choice will be announced this year.

Sure. Another liberal mecca.
Apple is amping up their data center. Starts soon.
They can expect plenty of inspections and fingerprinting from Officer Fife!
It’s concerning because North Carolina is very politically divided.
First Charlotte, now Raleigh, then the whole state goes. What next, Starbucks moving there?
While smaller cities like Columbus only get warehouses and datacenters.
Yes. NC will become a deep blue state after this.
Wake County has already gone Commie Red. 57% for Hillary.
The climate in Raleigh NC is ideal. Not too hot and not too cold. Lots of Yankees live in the Triangle, a liberal mecca.
If I ran liberal Amazon North Carolina would be ideal. It is also more or less centrally located for the East Coast
It sure is strange the Amazon and Apple are only considering liberal cities for all their high paying jobs. Raleigh, Austin, Dallas, and the DC area.
Why ain’t they looking at more conservatives towns in West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama or Mississippi for their high paying jobs?
Wonder how much this will cost the state’s taxpayers..?
My bet is that this is more about how much of the state’s tax money NC was willing to cough up than it was about the climate.
North Carolina unfortunately has one of the most backward legal systems in the nation (there is no speedy trial law, for example; in one glaring example a man was held in jail four and a half years BEFORE trial, and it was ruled not to violate his right to a speedy trial);
the political corruption is immense (Durham was the home to Frank Matthews, the east coast heroin king; and later NC was home to his successor, Frank Lucas, “American Gangster”), and that much drug money flowing through a state corrupts everything from the corner cop to the statehouse;
and of course the Duke lacrosse case was there — possible perhaps in few other places than NC, because the legal system was so corrupt it allowed for the railroading of three innocent students for a crime that never happened.
Great place to move to and bring your family to raise (sarc/off)
I beg to differ. That area gets every single kind of bad weather and extreme weather that there is. More so than Minnesota. More so than Texas. 100% humidity for weeks in a row, snow that brings traffic to a halt for a full day, ice and sleet that bring branches and powerlines down and kills your power (and heater), plenty of rain from about half of the named hurricanes every year, you name it. I don't count tornadoes as weather myself.
That's in the last three years, most of them multiple times.
The employees they have, and want to add, would not accept a place that's not at least moving more to the left, toward bigger government, toward a more nanny state environment, toward the environment they're already used to. No "Whole Foods"? Out. Not "diverse" enough? Out. No Peruvian grocery that delivers? Out! Gawd, people drive PICK-UP TRUCKS? And have GUNS in RACKS in the back window? OUT!
I doubt that. Its been pretty reliably conservative. Trump carried NC fairly comfortably.
