Republican businessman John Cox has strengthened his second-place position in the race for California governor, making him likely to qualify for the general election against Democrat Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom after the June 5 primary, according to a new poll.

The Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies has Newsom at 33 percent of likely voters and Cox at 20 percent, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Because of the jungle primary, the top two winners face each other.

Democrats thought it was in the bag to shut republicans out.

But I bet there will be some surprises come Tuesday night, like democrats being shut out of congressional races, and Cox a solid contender for governor.

My dream jungle primary outcome would be to see both Democrats shut out of the governor race’s 1-2.

Fun, eh? This is Deep Blue CA we’re talking about here.

Should be interesting! Turnout will be key.
Would love to see Newsom, Villar shutout! But every commercial seems to be either one of those loons..

“Cox a solid contender for governor.”

Nice dream.

Forgive me for being skeptical.

If it turns out that way don’t worry a judge will fix it right away ala Prop 187.

Nope.

We should spend our time and money on mid terms, in places we can win, at the representative level in Congress and Senate

If GOP had any brains, they’d fund a third-party spoiler run by Tony VivaLaRaza in the general election (assuming Cox can pull off 2nd place in the jungle).

In Illinois John Cox ran in every jungle primary he could find. Did he actually profit from, and learn from, his experience in Illinois?

From the article:

"Some Democrats are backing Allen with mailings designed to look like they come from Republican sources, in an attempt to split the GOP vote and allow Villaraigosa to squeak through.

Typical Leftist underhanded tactics.

I believe the general election will be between John Cox and Gavin Gruesome.

I beliver throughout the summer Cox will draw fairly close to Gruesome in the polls and be in a neck and neck race by October. Then Gloria Alred will rear her ugly head with several hired female accusers that will destroy Cox. Gruesome then elected governor by 20 points. Then if you thought Jerry Brown was bad, just you wait.

California Dreamin’, California Girls, Hot Rods, Drag Racing, Aircraft & Space Vehicles Assembly Plants, the Beach Boys, The Beaches, The American Dream can return to the once cutting edge state of California.....Destroy the Democrat Party...and watch the great state of California return to its number one slot as the leading state in the union.

Vote Democrat and the state of California will soon die!!!

Having a Republican on the CA governor ballot will boost Republican turnout in November, and help in several key US House races in southern California. It could be the difference for Republicans in the House and basically save Trump's second term.

Things must die for other things to live.

Perhaps the death of the State of California is a progression to something wonderful, but the process over which we really have no control.

LOL. What a complete waste of time for any Republican to run for CA Governor. Gavin Newsome is a lock and will win in an easy landslide, probably by a 3-1 margin if not more.

It is such a joke to even discuss the California governorship. It is like discussing someone running against Putin or the president of China. We already know how it turns out and there is no possible other outcome.

Yep. It is a complete waste of money to run a GOP candidate for CA gov. A complete and total waste. Money down the rat hole. It would be better spent toward Wounded Warriors.

Sorry, but you two are wrong. The Democrat Party has attempted to break any opposition in California by rigging the process. The Cox campaign is a step to frustrate that effort.

Politics is not static, California was not always the leftist stronghold it seems to do today. West Virginia was once dominated by Democrats, now it is thouroughly Trump Country. Wisconsin was the home of Progresivism, Trump won there.

Californians are slowly recognizing the costs of leftist policies. So what if Cox can’t win this year? Campaign after campaign we should wear away at leftist dominance of a beautiful state like water on rock.

California is a lost cause. Allocating money for GOP candidates in CA is wasted money.

Hilary Clinton received 8,750,000 votes.
Donald J Trump received 4,500,000 votes.

That is almost DOUBLE. You are right that the Dems have CA rigged, but anybody who thinks that California could be in play for the GOP any time soon is in denial of the facts in evidence. It takes decades upon decades to overcome the demographics that cause a 4+ million vote deficit.

And yet what are those Demographics? 60% of all K-12 school children in California are Hispanic.

Let that sink in. Read that over again several times, because that is the future of California. The Democrats start with a built in 4+ million vote lead in California statewide elections and going forward, Hispanics will just widen that lead.

I appreciate your fight and optimism but California is a hopeless lost cause. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. GOP candidates in California are irrelevant and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

'Donald J Trump will lose, and he'll lose big, probably drop out of the primaries after a dismal 5th place finish in the Iowa primaries...' -- virtually every political pundit.

Victory in California is still possible, focus has to be on taxes. Gas taxes being a topper, but the Democrats plan to triple state taxes for 'single payer' health coverage would be a strong second.

Not saying a GOP governor could stop any of that, but a barrage of vetos and constantly pointing out when liberal plans cost Californians even more money could flip enough seats to end liberal supermajorities.
