Trump should submit Korean deal to Senate as treaty for ratification: House leader McCarthy
The Washington Times ^ | June 2, 2018 | Stephen Dinan

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Saturday that President Trump should submit any eventual deal with North Korea to the Senate for approval as a treaty, saying lawmakers should have a full say on the matter.

The California Republican said President Obama bungled the Iran nuclear deal negotiations by not treating them a treaty but instead as an executive agreement. That made it easy for Mr. Trump to revoke U.S. participation in the deal earlier this year.

Mr. McCarthy told MSNBC’s Hugh Hewitt the treaty route is a way of not only making the deal lasting, but also of countering those who argue Mr. Trump’s tear-up of the Iran deal makes other countries uncertain of negotiating with the U.S.

The first order of business would be signing a permanent peace treaty to end the existing armistice.

IIRC Obama had help, republican senator Corker was instrumental in subverting the constitution for Obama’s Iran “deal”.

About this Constitution thingy.... either we follow it in its entirety or we don’t. We need to stop this pick and choose approach - some parts are living and subject to our interpretation of what they said and some parts are dead and can be ignored..

Of course any agreement with North Korea should be submitted to Congress for ratification. Otherwise, any future president could alter it or discard it as he pleases - apparently that never occurred to Obama.

Agreed, I can already picture Schumer and Pelosi seeking out cameras to inform the voters it’s a terrible idea because President Trump is in office.

Agreed. A formal cessation of hostilities by NK, conditions of the peace, surrender etc, reparations and sanctions regarding military development etc, then a treaty if appropriate, but that would pretty much be on the SK part, we do not need a treaty w/NK, unless it is a trade agreement mutual benefit agreement etc.

If I recall, the Korean war was a UN issue, not just the US. (not that the UN is worth the traffic tickets in NYC they run up)

I’ve been advocating for a ratified treaty with Norklandia since whispers of a summit first emerged.

I a far deal which takes nukes out of the north and shuts down their capability, I cannot imagine anyone in the Senate voting against it.

Not even Democrats.

In an election year.

If and once it is a treaty, yes. I fear McCarthy is up to friend Ryan’s Never Trumper tricks to limit Trump’s authority.

I’ll bet there aren’t 67 votes in the Senate for #MAGA.

These Republican idiots make me sick!

This is NOT a treaty in the traditional sense. It is more of the U.S. overseeing a treaty signed among China, NK, SK, and Japan.

This deal is paving the way for reunification and an end to the Korean War (which technically has not ended).

Was the Japanese surrender to the U.S. submitted to the Senate? No, it wasn't.

Typical, scumbag Republicans meddling and effing thing up.
