Orbán, Soros, and the Unbridgeable Conflict Over Hungarian Sovereignty
TAC ^ | 4 June 2018 | Skomantas Pocius

The victory of Viktor Orbán and his party Fidesz in the Hungarian elections last month elicited the predictable flurry of laments over the rise of illiberalism.

Such coverage has tended to emphasize the Orbán government’s animosity towards the Hungarian-American financier George Soros, a prolific contributor to progressive causes in Hungary and around the world. Soros is best known for his Open Society Foundation to which he donated $18 billion last year, his association with the Clintons, and as the financial speculator “who broke the Bank of England” in 1992. But he’s also come to be regarded as a leader of the liberal democratic resistance and a “victim” of illiberal tendencies in Hungary.

Orbán’s legal and political moves against the Open Society Foundation and ongoing rhetoric against Soros himself certainly play into the dominant narrative of one-sided victimization. Soros’s own statements have contributed, too—for instance his claim that Orbán’s government is “an anti-democratic…mafia regime” more oppressive than the Soviet occupation. But such an unbalanced narrative fails to uncover what the Orbán-Soros conflict is really about, and with its narrow perspective is not much more insightful than the anti-Soros howls of the enraged right.

A more realistic analysis makes three things clear. First, the situation in Hungary is best understood not as one-sided hostility, but, to use Soros’s own words, “an unbridgeable conflict of principles.” Orbán and Soros stand for two essentially different visions of Hungary, and their conflict is about fundamental political questions: the nature of the Hungarian nation and the role of the Hungarian state in it. This is a fight between nationalists and anti-nationalists—those who view the nation as sovereign in Hungary and cherish its right to self-determination, and those who urge a move beyond sovereign states organized along lines of national identity.

Lest we forget, the never-Trump Weekly Standard recently ran a column defending Soros. Of course, they also oppose the recrudescence of "nationalism" (belief that national borders are desirable and essential to securing liberty for a country's citizens).

What people who have little to no knowledge of Hungarian history/damned globalists refuse to or don't understand at all is that Hungary for Hungarians is something which Hungarians have yearned for for millennia!

Soros was and still is ALWAYS just out for himself and wants to "screw" everyone else. His father raised him that way and was a "no borders"/no special language ( his father was a proponent of everyone speaking "ESPERANTO" and a one worlder )moron.

Human nature never changes, only technology changes, ergo, human being want their own country ( or tribe )and countries and people really DO have different ways, traditions, and ideals, with many being incompatible with others!

Times change. People don’t.

Becoming a Putin puppet is just as bad as being a Soros one. Poland understands this as does Romania and others.

Sec. Pompeo has already been urging Hungary to fend off Russian influence and trust USA for its energy/gas/oil instead of Russia. Italy and Austria are also going down questionable routes. They may exchange taking their cues from Brussels for the Kremlin. That is not “sovereignty.” That is puppetry.

Germany’s Merkel and France’s Macron have chosen to cozy up to Putin by cementing NordStream 2 pipeline deal, salavaging Iran Nuke deal, and bypassing U.S. sanctions on Ruaaia to invest billions in their companies.

Paris Climate Accord, Two State Palestine, are not just E.U. projects but Russia/China efforts to undermine and weaken USA’s sovereignty as well. They are united.

Trump Admin wants our European allies to:

a) pay their full share into NATO
b) diversify their sources of energy/oil so that the monopoly Germany has given Russia via things like the NordStream 2 pipeline does not solidify
c) engage in fair and respectable, mutually reciprocal trade practices and
d) avoid Chinese invasion of economic landscape.

I have been surprised to learn that this man is held in any regard at all, but apparently he is. Which seems sort of like being a fan of Stalin, or Mao, or the Kmer Rouge. The guy is pure demon in my books.

Needs to hung high, and I mean that literally. Clinton may be the spawn of Satan, but Soros is the demon himself.

TAC seems to be teetering on the edge of internationalism and left wing globalism.

Soros is only out for one thing, himself. Money, power, and himself, so that's 3 things. Soros is only out for 3 things, money, power and himself. He made his fortune in World War 2 by leading his fellow Jews to the train cars, offering to take care of their stuff until they came back. But hey, it's not his fault they never came back! So he took care of their stuff anyway. Jewelry, money, whatever.

After the war, he was a money changer, speculating in the different prices of the various postwar currencies. And probably selling some of the stuff he was taking care of for the people who couldn't come back to claim it.

The fact that progressives and liberals admire him so much tells me all I need to know about them. The fact that he continues to breathe air and walk this earth makes me doubt the existence of any kind of benevolent God, God with the o in the middle, not the dash God, G-d. I always like God to know who I am talking about when I mention him. Of course, God may have a good painful death in store for him, so there's still hope for God.

US State Dept:

Secretary Michael Pompeo met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in Washington on Wednesday. The two discussed areas of mutual interest and opportunities for our countries to increase cooperation. The Secretary underscored the importance of maintaining a vibrant civil society. The Secretary also emphasized the urgent need to help Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, including the importance of facilitating and supporting Ukraine’s engagement with NATO, and the need to counter Russian malign influence in Central Europe. Both sides agreed that Europe should diversify its sources of energy and discussed increasing U.S. investment in Hungary. The Secretary and Foreign Minister committed to concluding a Defense Cooperation Agreement in the days ahead.

So nowhere in all these schemes, plans, including the EU (the anti-US bloc) is there a dream or hope for betterment of mankind? Orban cares about his Hungarians, same in Poland, but it seems all the rest are cold-hearted megalomaniacs?

No not megalomaniacs. The Western Europeans just take longer to figure things out. It really was America that saved Europe from itself in WWII and the same holds true today.

Trump and the USA (with all our crazy dysfunction) are simply ahead of the game in terms of grasping the values the West is called to stand for.

Our President may not be a perfect Christian but he is standing strong for “one nation under God,” for the dignity of life (anti-abortion), and is boldly committed to things like the integrity of Jerusalem, etc... There is a lot of significance in that.

Europe is still recovering its soul, ravaged by the horrors of the 20th Century, the world wars, etc...

Western Europe is more distant from God. Parts of Eastern Europe less so because of grasping the lessons of communism.

I suggest revisiting President Trump’s speech in Poland to get a picture of what I mean. No current European leader would have been capable of delivering this:

Soros is almost dead. More wealth and power will do him no good unless he has other goals.

And those goals are the destruction of the USA and the West.
