France, UK sail warships in South China Sea

MANILA, Philippines — In a bid to challenge China's increasing militarization in the South China Sea, France and the United Kingdom will sail warships in the contested waterway.

French Minister of Armed Forces Florence Parly and British Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson made this statement at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore over the weekend.

In her speech during the plenary session of the defense summit, Parly relayed France's support for a code of conduct in the South China Sea that would be legally binding, comprehensive, effective and consistent with international law.

"We believe negotiations are the way to go. Meanwhile, we should be clear that the fait accompli is not a fait accepted," Parly said.

At least five French ships sailed through the South China Sea last year, according to the French defense minister.

British helicopters and ships joined the France task force that sailed in the region. Germans also boarded the French ships as observers during these operations, Parly added.

"Europeans have started to mobilize more widely in support of this endeavor... I believe we should broaden this effort even further," Parly said.

Without mentioning the South China Sea, Williamson noted that "increasingly aggressive states... infringing regional access, freedoms and security through coercion" are threats to the rules-based order.

China is rapidly becoming a significant military challenge, and WE ARE ASSISTING THEM by buying everything in every single store ...

from China.

We run a MASSIVE trade imbalance with China. All time record, and going up yet again this year.

From an all-time record, the year before.

And an all-time record, virtually every single year for the last generation and a half.

We need to bring manufacturing back to America.

We need to buy things, made in America.

I know. They still have a shitty Navy and it isn’t going to get better if we do as you have suggested.

We should destroy them economically while we still can. Then they will have a civil war.

China has a long history of shooting themselves in the foot. We should shoot the other foot. For good measure.

I actually do not wish bad for China.

I actually lived there pretty early, as they were opening to the outside world.

But they do NOT view, or act upon the world, as we do. When we make agreements, we keep them (for the most part)

China is all about taking advantage of agreements, to advance their own interests.

A TON of people for the last generation and a half, have sold out to China.

Now Trump seems to have another plan.

I sure hope he does, and I hope his advisors do not influence him away from his instincts.

This is becoming a very large problem.

Trump gets it. But so many people are already sold to China.

I do not know whether he can accomplish this, alone.

But he is sure the only guy, on our side.

Anywhere.

China wants to get even with the West for the years of Western domination in China.

I’ve lived in Hong Kong for the last 15 years. The Chinese government is horrible and the mainlanders are like locusts. Arrogant beyond all comprehension.

Petulant children who think they are superior in every way to everyone else and have no sense of humor. They have nothing to offer the world.

They are buying back artifacts that would have been destroyed in the cultural revolution and blaming the west for looting their country.

If you want proof, they have no allies in the world. Every one of their neighbors hates them.

I don’t know about that.

Thirty years ago, I think we had an opportunity to open up the entire globe, as equal partners.

But now, we really, really have sold out. So many companies, in so many industries. Everything.

We have a huge problem, because a very large amount of our own companies, have sold out. Huge amounts.

90% of computers are now made there. And I don’t even know where the other 10% are made. Russia?

Laptops. Air conditioners. Refrigerators. Lawn goods. iPhones. Almost everything manufactured sold in Walmart. Sold in Target. Sold in K-mart. Almost everything sold in every electronics store in America. Almost all tools. Almost all houseware.

Made in China. And we just keep getting further, and further, and further sold out to China.

Everyone. Both political parties.

For a very, very, very long time.

Nearly 50 years after Nixon started this crap and they still have an economy 1/10 as efficient as the US.

If ever there was a paper tiger who needs to be crushed, it’s them. Belligerent punks.

I just realized that you and I are having a conversation...haha.

I like your thoughtful posts. You are correct about China taking advantage of agreements. In my experience when you signed an agreement with a Chinese company, they thought that was the time to negotiate.

They have no respect for the rule of law and they have no respect for an agreement because they think the West took advantage of them blah blah blah ad nauseum. They just use it as an excuse to behave badly.

They don’t like it when I point out that they got their asses kicked six ways to Sunday by Japan and we liberated them from that tiny country.

I have many Chinese friends but the vast majority of them are either Hong Kongers or educated in Western countries. They have no love lost for China. Quite the opposite. They hate the commie influence that is destroying the unique Hong Kong culture.

I am in Vietnam currently. However I am American.

The thing is, that Vietnamese were once part of China (if I am understanding correctly) but about a thousand years ago they broke away, started their own writing system, and are now independent.

Sure they fought against American involvement in their country recently, but they have a long history of standing up for their country.

The thing is, of all the countries in the world I have travelled to, this is literally, the very first country, in which I do not detect any racism.

Ever. It is astounding, to me.

It took me a while to realize, and to come to terms with that. I think maybe I missed it originally because of my background with the Chinese, I did not realize the Vietnamese are different.

Now I am not saying that in my experience the Chinese are fundamentally racist. I was very happy with my experience there. But I have noticed there is more racism perceived now, with the increase in Chinese involvement around the world.

I have seen a racial aspect in every country I have ever been in. I grew up with racism in America. Now it is dramatically different in America, and I think myself, it is time to remove all of legal mess involved.

I have seen it is Mexico. I have even seen discrimination (not sure if it was racially motivated, or may have been because of other consideration) but I have seen... discrimination... in Cambodia and Thailand. In Europe.

Everywhere, basically. But not here.

And we are badly, badly mismanaging that, for the future of the world.

In my view.

“China wants to get even with the West for the years of Western domination in China.”

Compared to a few thousand years of them enslaving their own people...

F the Chinese. We should solve their over population problem with a nuke on Beijing. Then let the Taiwanese and Vietnamese carve them up.

China is an empire. Ok if your Han Chinese—not so much if you are a minority. Muslims get it in the neck in China.

No F’s given for their muslims. Tibetan culture is being exterminated.
As for this rest I am just saying blaming China’s current expansionism on other countries previous exploitation of them (exploiters included Japan, not just the West) is BS.
