Unpopular gas tax could be issue in California governor's race

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —

San Diego businessman Jon Cox may be the underdog in the governor’s race, but Republicans believe Democratic opponent and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is vulnerable because of his support for an unpopular tax.

If there’s one issue that resonates with Republicans, it’s the repeal of the gas tax in California. On Wednesday, Cox made a point of blaming Newsom for the 12-cent hike at the pumps -- even though Newsom, as lieutenant governor, was not involved in the legislative vote.

“He wants to defend the gas tax,” Cox said. “I'm leading the effort to repeal the gas tax.”

Newsom does support the gas tax, as he declared during a May gubernatorial candidate debate in San Jose. Newsom said the tax would raise $52 billion for road repairs and infrastructure improvements.

“We need to continue to invest,” Newsom said last month. “I applaud the courage of the legislative leaders, and I think we should do the right thing and extend that gas tax.”

Too bad Jon Cox is such an unlikable weirdo.

Otherwise we'd have a real shot here.

Still, this bodes well for House Republicans in the state. Turnout should be good and Trump is a net add.

Gas tax and the sanctuary state deal will be a winner for Cox.

There are a host of issues on which to nail Newsom.

He’s the politician you don’t like; about the only things going for him are his looks and his trophy wife.

Cox has his work cut out for him.

The Gas Tax Repeal Iniative has more than the required signatures to go on the ballot in November. Cox should ram this up Gavin’s a$$ with a hot poker.

“We need to continue to invest”

Geez, is that what democrats are calling taxes like this? No wonder Calif is circling the toilet, what with electing this sort of creep.

John Cox has run for public office as a Democrat before, but he’s never won. Now, with Trump’s endorsement, he’s the GOP’s candidate for CA governor. Go Figure!
It’s like Arnold the Awful all over again perhaps, but if he were able to best Newsom, it would be a good thing.

Yes, they make the people poorer and then call it an investment.☺

CA could have saved many billions if not for these criminal azzholes supporting/pandering to illegals for the past decade++ all on the backs of the looted tax payers. These people are certified liars.

The people of the State of California better start praying 24/7 through November for Cox to be elected the next Governor if they don’t want to totally go down the toilet for good. Newsom and his Progressive cabal will totally destroy what little is left of California. Newsom is as wacked, IMO, as Moonbeam or perhaps worse!

Everyone I talk to is looking to leave California. Hopefully, Cox can stop the hemorrhage of California caused by the State’s corrupt Liberal politicians.

Republicans promise to lower taxes without the necessary votes to end excessive spending.

Chapter 11 here we come!

My understanding is that Cox is NRA approved.

About the only thing we on FR can agree on is the 2nd Amendment, so if he can do something to bring the 2nd Amendment back in fuller force in CA then that would be a good thing.

as long as Cal can spend 20 billion a year on illegals, we are flush with money.

Agree. I see it as possibly California’s last shot to sever these leftist from power. Newsom wins, that’s pretty much it.
