U.S. Steel Corp. says it will restart the second of two shuttered blast furnaces at its Granite City mill and hire 300 employees.
The decision by the Pittsburgh-based company follows a March announcement that it would restart the other blast furnace at the Granite City Works in the Metro East and recall 500 workers. U.S. Steel laid off hundreds of workers when it idled the furnaces in late 2015, with employment at the nearly 2,000 worker plant dipping as low as 100 in the ensuing two years.
The company says the restart of the first furnace is in progress and that the second furnace should be in operation around Oct. 1. After the two restarts are complete, about 1,500 people will work at the plant, U.S. Steel says.

Obama: These jobs are not coming back.....................
Outstanding, the USA CAN!!!
Not coming back to Pittsburgh (the mills have been torn down)
They were probably out of date anyway.................
Have to be an idiot to try cranking back up in Liberalville Pittsburg even if the plats were intact.
“Have to be an idiot to try cranking back up in Liberalville Pittsburg”
I live there ... it’s funny ... the liberals that whined about manufacturing jobs leaving when Bush was in office and they whine about steel mills possibly coming back ... they’ll whine and protest the mills should they ever make a comeback here. That will sit well with union democrat voters ...
You are right. Somebody floated the idea a few years back and the enviro-wackos went nuts.
Nah, we are becoming San Francisco on the Monongahela.
Full of Millenial software engineers and bike paths and coworking spaces and endless numbers of Gay Pride festivals.
Myron Cope is spinning in his grave n’at.
Yes, but! What about Iron City Beer?
The union Democrat voters have the government they supported for decades, indulged in peccadilloes for at least as long and voted slavishly for year after year for more than half a century.
They get what they deserve.
“Obama: These jobs are not coming back”
Trump must have found that “magic wand” that BO was laughing about.
These two furnaces are in Granite City, Illinois.
In 1977 I was going cross country from Colorado to Wash DC along I-70. I was a young GI, had a used 70 Ford Maverick, and got 4 new retreads (remember those, before radials?) put on and started my trip.
By the time I got to Kansas City, Missouri I knew something was wrong! Just West of St Louis, the reapplied treads came off. Not wanting to stop in Soul Louis, I crossed the Mississippi and wound up in Granite City. I limped to a tire dealer. I had practically no real money, no credit card or even check book. At the time I got paid 2 a month by cash and that was it.
Well, to make long story sort, this guy who owned the place had a son who died in Vietnam, and he gave me and mounted four new radials and told me to mail him the money when ever I had enough.
Some grat folks in Granite City!
President Daddy for benevolent dictator! (please, sarcasm there...)
The first liberal in history was seen standing in a cold rain complaining and crying about the rest of the tribe destroying nature by cutting some branches to make a shelter and build a fire. Some things just never change but seems like there are a lot more of them around then ever before.
Did you ever think the US would see an uptick in melted steel? Most of the cookers got dismantled and sent to Asia.
