The Department of Justice reportedly seized a New York Times reporter's phone and email records this year in an effort to probe the leaking of classified information, the first known instance of the DOJ going after a journalist's data under President Trump.
The Times reported Thursday that the DOJ seized years' worth of records from journalist Ali Watkins's time as a reporter at BuzzFeed News and Politico before she joined The Times in 2017 as a federal law enforcement reporter, according to the report Thursday.
Watkins was alerted by a prosecutor in February that the DOJ had years of records and subscriber information from telecommunications companies such as Google and Verizon for two email accounts and a phone number belonging to her.
Investigators did not receive the content of the records, according to The Times.
The newspaper reported that it learned of the letter on Thursday.

Senate Intel ex-security director indicted on false-statements charges in probe of possible leaks
A former security director for the Senate Intelligence Committee was indicted on charges of giving false statements to FBI agents looking into possible leaks of classified information, the Justice Department announced Thursday night.
James A. Wolfe, 58, served as the panel’s security director for 29 years, according to the feds.
Earlier Thursday, The New York Times revealed federal investigators had seized years’ worth of email and phone records relating to one of its reporters, Ali Watkins. She previously had a three-year romantic relationship with Wolfe, The Times reported, adding that the records covered a period of time before she joined the paper.

Fox is reporting now that this guy used encrypted apps to send leaks. It seems they actually had some evidence to seize the his reporter girlfriend’s phone and email records. Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut.
