Turkey’s defense minister says Turkish and U.S. soldiers will patrol the key northern Syrian town of Manbij as part of a deal reached this week for the withdrawal of a Syrian Kurdish militia.

Speaking in Brussels after a NATO summit late Friday, Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said he met his American counterpart James Mattis. “We had a very detailed, constructive and positive meeting on the Manbij roadmap,” he said.

Turkey has repeatedly called on the U.S. to stop backing the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, which it considers terrorists and an extension of a Kurdish insurgency within its own borders.

The U.S.-backed force has been instrumental in fighting the Islamic State group and pushing them out of northern Syria, including in Manbij.

How can Trump be so blind.

Turkey invaded the Afrin area of Syria, kicked out or kidnapped to Turkey any Kurdish fighters who had been protecting Afrin from both Assad and ISIS. Then this week he moved harvesting equipment into the Afrin area and harvested the Afrin people’s wheat harvest, to ship it to Turkey.

Erdogan is an Islamist megalomaniac we should not be making any deals with. Unless Erdogan is voted out of office - not remotely likely, Turkey should be kicked out of NATO and we should not be doing deals with it that mere help protect its genocidal actions against the Kurds.

And the democratically elected Islamist lite authoritarian government of Turkey is OK with the USA for now, not a good sign.

If we can somehow get them to be a legitimate ally, and not jihadists, again, that will be a big deal.

This sounds like a tiny move in that direction.

Those on the Syrian regime side do not see the US as a fighter of ISIS right now.

They say the ISIS units operate with impunity from the north side of the Euphrates River in eastern Syria against Syrian government allied forces.

How can Trump be so blind

I'm speculating: Did President Trump at last get the real information? That would be that all of those chemical attacks and starving children were deep-state shenanigans that support if not ISIS, its goal to topple Assad? That McCain's Terrorists have enabled ISIS from its very beginnings? If that's the case, perhaps US troops are there to keep Turkey in line. I hope that's the case.

The commander of Manbij Military Council Muhammad Mustafa / Abu Adel says that the MMC will not allow any external forces to enter Manbij or interefere in the internal affairs of Manbij.

I suspect Turkey is overstating tHe deal.
US has said that Turkey was originally promised control of area west of Euphrates. So a buffer zone arounf Manbij is a gain for the Kurds.

That information is wrong. Moon Over Alabama is not a reliable source.

The SDF does not support ISIS.

Turkey supports ISIS and al-Qaeda, and has reseeded them in the place they recently practiced Ethinic Cleansing, Afrin (Efrin).
