Ron Hubbard's Dianetics on the bestsellers list by going into bookstores, buying all the copies of the book then sending them back to the distributor's warehouse so they could be RE-stocked on retail shelves brand new and unread. And this would continue over and over and over again. It was possible that a "new" copy of Dianetics completely unopened had already been purchased two or three dozen times.
That same ruse was used in England to get records on the charts.
