Rep. Barbara Comstock hangs on in GOP primary
Washington Examiner ^ | June 12, 2018 | W. James Antle III

Rep. Barabara Comstock, R-Va., beat back conservative primary challenger Shak Hill to defend her House seat this fall.

Comstock will face off against Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton in Virginia's 10th Congressional District, which voted for Hillary Clinton by 10 points in 2016.

The suburban district's support for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam in 2017, as well as its centrist voters' continued antipathy toward President Trump, has made it one of the Democrats' top targets in the midterm elections.

Unfortunate. Shak Hill was a much better candidate and would have been a good conservative Congressman. Pretty much every conservative organization gave Comstock an F.

Comstock is a Trump deranged democrat who deserves to lose.
It’s one seat the Republicans can give up to get rid of her and teach a lesson to other RINO amnesty lovers.

Comstock is the perfect example of an idiot RINO who has been bought by the GOPE. I feel bad for Shak as I like what I heard from him, and he’s genuine.

That’s too bad, Bush League Republicans need to become extinct politically before the Republic does.

Shak is a good guy but he doesn’t have the killer instinct needed to deal with these kinds of people.

Shak’s an interesting guy. I served on active duty with him at Hanscom and he was a few years ahead of me at the Academy. Kind of an odd duck but still probably better than Comstock.

What a lousy choice between Comstock and Hill. I’d look for another option.

“Hangs on?” I suggest Comstock won handily with her 60 percent of the vote. Hill was well-financed and fought well and he might have been a good general election candidate, but he lost by 20 points.

Shak Hill is one of us; Comstock isn’t.

No, he is NOT one of us. I know him loosely. He is a loser and loose cannon. He’s failed every campaign. I would not associate with him ever.

My district. Comstock used to be very conservative and served in the state house and worked for Wolf. However, since the district is now very anti Trump and a lot less conservative than it was just a few years ago, she felt she needed to reflect her district which is a terrible mistake because the conservatives won't vote for her now and the dems won't come near her name on election day.

She would have lost in November regardless of how she handled the issues as conservative or as whatever she is now. She is a political animal and I'm sure she knows she's toast in November. Winning only 60% in your primary is not much of an endorsement and shows her time is up in the House.

So, this is 1 of the 23 seats the dems need to win the House in November.

Hill only raised 200K. This is a top rat target that will take millions to defend. Perfect or no, bouncing Comstock for Hill would have been a huge mistake. You don’t play around in districts like this. You want someone better in that district they need to be an impeccable candidate (doesn’t sound like that’s Hill) and fully funded or it’s just a stupid risk.

Of course. Hill’s buckets of paid media were courtesy of several well-funded groups.

.
Comstock will likely find herself having to distance herself from the president in the general election in a district that Hillary Clinton carried by 10 points in 2016. She was No. 2 on Roll Call’s list of the 10 most vulnerable House incumbents last month.

A strong campaigner, Comstock overperformed Trump in 2016. Democrats know it won’t be enough to tie her to the president. She’s clashed with Trump (on camera) earlier this year when she told him, “We don’t need a government shutdown.”

Comstock has broken with her party on some votes that would have hurt federal workers in her district. She also voted against the House-passed GOP health care overhaul last year (although Democrats will still tie her to GOP efforts to repeal the 2010 law). But on other issues, such as the GOP tax bill, she’s stuck with leadership. That could be a vulnerability in an affluent district where many voters claim state and local tax deductions, that the tax law limited.

Comstock got Fs from virtually every conservative organization.

She’s an old-fashioned liberal Republican. Not worth the trouble. That seat is going Democrat. Conservatives won’t be motivated to bother showing up for Comstock.
