Graham: Trump citing cost for end of war games is 'ridiculous'

(CNN)President Donald Trump's reasoning for the United States stopping war games on the Korean Peninsula because of cost is "ridiculous," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday night.

"It is ridiculous," Graham told CNN's Anderson Cooper. Graham continued by saying he did support stopping the drills, but in order "to give North Korea some breathing space to see if we can get a deal," noting that "the money we spend training with our allies is money well spent." "It's not a burden onto the American taxpayer to have a forward deployed force in South Korea. It brings stability. It's a warning to China that you can't just take over the whole region. So I reject that analysis that it costs too much, but I do accept the proposition, let's stand down and see if we can find a better way here," the South Carolina lawmaker said on "Anderson Cooper 360." Trump announced on Tuesday the US would no longer take part in joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. The news came as he was detailing his historic sit-down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

I like the idea but it’s a stupid idea. I agree but I think he’s wrong. I support but I oppose.

These war games are basically a computerized training program. They can simulate the same thing without the use of our assets in the open air.

Pretty much the same thing as Kim parading his military assets.

the games aren’t scheduled until 2019. I think we’ll know by then if NK is complying.

No doubt in my mind, that the media is purely and totally anti-Trump. It’s factored into every show, every day, every minute.

There is really no point wasting any time watching these people.

We can’t discount the input of South Korea leaders and obviously they were in agreement with this.

Why, I have been in some exercises in the military. The surface Navy tries to cheat. The submarines sink everyone and the sub sailors know the outcome before we started.

Why would anyone in DC care about cost? It’s not how they think when you have an endless supply of money.

To GOP embarrassment and fave warmonger... Lindsey “Clueless” Gramnisty. Trump may have scheduled War Games so he could concede them at the summit. #ArtOfTheDeal

I think what he said was the cost savings would be a side benefit. He sort-of conceded that this was a small concession to Kim (probably to help him save face).
Does not hurt our readiness - we are still training, just a pause in large-scale maneuvers.

Yes Lindsay, all the “winning” would never have happened if you hadn’t stuck your nose in the process. Go back to peanut country.

Good insights. War games tend to be used as shows of might and capability to crush. To suspend them as a show of good faith (and as you say, to let Kim save face) seems more than reasonable, since the US forces can always fire up an exercise later if that kind of show of force is necessary. The real question is:

Why would a US senator publicly challenge the president of his own party regarding a perfectly reasonable negotiation technique?

Trump was obviously setting the stage for negotiating trade deals with south Korea. Graham and other Trump critics cannot seem to understand Trump’s ability to work on more than one thing and to use leverage from one deal to the next.

Can our supposed “party” take some kind of actions against the fake CNN Republicans at some point?

They NEVER speak for the base. Never.

The minute they get elected, these creeps forget who is picking up the check.

But they NEVER forget who's picking up THEIR check. They're all a pack of traitors. They serve a master who was not elected.

I’ll tell you what’s ridiculous. Linda Graham flapping his gums, pretending to know his @$$ from a cork pistol; THAT’s ridiculous.

They've been going on for many, many years so I'd discount that idea.

In fact, by taking them away, the games have become a behavioral tool and Kim has now been put on notice.
