With a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Janus v. AFCSME case expected any day, Connecticut’s public sector unions are trying to convince members not to opt-out of membership if the Supreme Court decides in favor of Mark Janus.
The Connecticut State Employees Association and the American Federation of Teachers informed their members of a Freedom of Information request for union members’ contact information that originated out of Illinois.
Leaders say this information could be used for an opt-out campaign in the wake of a positive Janus decision.

A decision in favor of Janus would essentially make Connecticut a right-to-work state for public sector employees, allowing government workers to opt out without paying any fees to unions. The decision would not affect unions in the private sector.
A similar case brought by California teacher Rebecca Friedrichs in 2016 tied 4-4 after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia left the Court evenly divided. With the appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, many believe the court may rule in Janus' favor.
While a positive Janus decision would only affect public employees, the public sector is the largest bastion of union power in the United States, and leaders worry a significant number of members will opt out if they no longer have to pay agency fees.
Leaders have cause to be concerned. A 2016 survey of union members across 27 states by the Nevada Policy Research Institute and the Association of American Educators showed nearly one-third would opt out of union membership.

FDR said the same thing. The rank! and file want it all and the azzwpes for the people don’t care. They just raise taxes.
This is horrible! Without extorted fees from high paid gov workers, how will they fund the Democrat Party???
After 11 years as a right-to-work State, lass than 7% of Indianapolis Public Schools teachers pay union dues, and the Democrat party has all but ceased to exist outside of Chicagoland and Indianapolis.
It would be nice to see Fed employee unions bled out.

Public sector unions should be disbanded. Union membership in private sector should be voluntary. Entirely.
Public sector labor unions are THE backbone of the Democratic Party. For all the talk of the NRA and other such groups, the campaign contributions of public sector labor unions to Democrats absolutely dwarf those of any other special interest groups to either party.
If they were given the choice, I think most would choose not to pay those union dues - at the very least, a large percentage of them would. This would be a devastating blow to the Democrats.
You are right. The reason taxes are so high, and getting higher is public unions. Public unions always push for more spending. Even if taxes are lowered, they push to raise public spending. Its pro-teacher, or pro firemen, or pro-police, or pro-military. We are always hearing about pay raises for public servants. But we never hear about the low retirement rate or the very high pensions. Spending and debt always go to the high pensions and low work hours.
Only decision this week was Ohio voter list ruling in Monday.
Do have to wait until next Monday , or 25th for final decisions?
I remember past June’s with decisions released other days of week... and more than 1 in a day.

I do not understand the idea that 4 of the justices (I know they are liberal) still find something in the constitution that allows a private company (the union) to dock (dues) your federal pay. Even if you do not want to be a part of the union.
There is absolutely no sense to what they are saying and how they are doing it. How do they sleep at night knowing they are twisting the law in this way? How do they mentally square that circle?

Connecticut should be a Right to work state...if they did that and cut taxes... Connecticut would be nice again...
One of my old college professors got this ball rolling back in the early 80’s when I was taking his classes. To his credit, we had no idea he was a named plaintiff in a case that at that time was going through the appeals courts.
SCOTUS rules in their favor eventually.
the case centered around forced political donations and that the plaintiffs didn’t want to support democrat causes.
