Musk to build underground high-speed rail connecting Chicago's loop and O'Hare

It's been the dream of Chicago's city government under several recent mayors to bypass the gridlocked loop traffic by building a high-speed rail system to O'Hare Airport.

Now it appears that the first steps to achieve that goal are being taken. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office announced that a proposal is being negotiated with tech billionaire Elon Musks's Boring Company and the city government.

There is no timeline and no cost estimates for the project, but Boring Company will finance the entire project.

Kindness of their hearts right? Not if we know elon. He'll get it back big time somehow. Hopefully they'll have really big "GUN FREE ZONE" signs to keep the murder rate down.

Research how well it went when Daley sold the parking meters to a private company..this is going the same way.
There is MONEY in it for Rahm..

As I recall, the existing “L” or elevated trains in Chicago, have a direct line from downtown to O’Hare.

If there’s already a train running, why the need for another?

Or to look at another way, why not run some express trains non stop from downtown to O’Hare on the existing tracks? Then you would have a non stop train ride to the airport.

It sounds like a huge expenditure for very little additional public benefit.

Musk is the PT Barnum of Tech.

Every time it looks like his empire is about to implode - out comes a more fantastic piece of news.

Truly, a gifted promoter.

Just think of the boon to tourism! /s

I'd imagine that it would be a pretty interesting ride from the Loop to O'Hare most nights.

Oh, but this isn't about public benefit. This is about huge expenditure.

You’re right. I rode it, round trip, back in 1990 when I had a one day business trip to Chicago. Took 40 minutes each way and was better than a cab on the expressway, a cab ride that can depend as much as two hours, depending on the traffic. The only trouble is the coaches are ordinary commuter ones and not equipped for luggage.

——This is about huge expenditure-—

I would argue it is about proof of concept. That is, a prototype to learn how to accomplish a short run that can be expanded in scale.

When I lived in the Chicago area, when flying out I took Metra to the Jefferson Park stop and took the El to the airport. Easy trip. This sounds like wasteful duplication, par for the course for Chicago.

Obama once spoke of our intercontinental railroad. Maybe he was just ahead of Musk in his thinking.
