Russia vows consequences after Norway invites more U.S. Marines

OSLO (Reuters) - Russia vowed on Thursday to retaliate for a plan by Norway to more than double the number of U.S. Marines stationed there.

Oslo announced on Tuesday that it would ask the United States, its NATO ally, to send 700 Marines to train in Norway from 2019, against 330 at present, and said the additional troops would be based closer to the Russian border.

"This makes Norway less predictable and could cause growing tensions, triggering an arms race and destabilizing the situation in northern Europe," the Russian Embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.

"We see it as clearly unfriendly, and it will not remain free of consequence."

Oslo has grown increasingly concerned about Russia since Moscow annexed of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, while adding that it does not regard its much larger neighbor as a direct threat.

The U.S. Marines were scheduled to leave at the end of this year after an initial contingent arrived in January 2017 to train for winter conditions. They are the first foreign troops to be stationed in Norway since World War Two.

Without regard to what Russia says, this is a bad idea.

For the entirety of the Cold War there were no US Troops in Norway.

Norway spend 1/3 - 1/4 percent of GDP on their own defense, instead of the 2% requirement in NATO.

The US has no interests in Norway.

Putin needs to stop behaving like Kim Jong Un and rehearsing long-range missile and WWIII inducing nuclear bomb attacks on Scandinavian and Baltic countries’ borders. It’s noisy and a bore and the Norwegians, Swedes, Estonians, et al. are understandably annoyed.

There is footage of his annual war games, but here is a clip of the ridiculous nuke video he showed during his SOTU speech in March.

I’m confused. If Trump is sending Marines to Norway wouldn’t that have to be because his boss, Pooty Poot, told him to?

And Russia is going to do what, exactly?

I’m not excited about the idea of more troop deployments, however Russia ain’t gonna do a damned thing and they aren’t impressing anyone.

Did Nikki Haley propose this? Let’s see the evidence that Russia was threatening Norway before we sent those troops. Otherwise, this can only be a part of the Russia-Russia-Russia diversion.

Norge should send their bikini teams to the US for training.

Norway should ask the USMC to skip the Russian border and to instead clean out the immigrant-gang-ruled parts of Oslo.

Gee, Norway and/or the Baltic states were no where in that video.

You must have sent the wrong one.

We had Marines going to Norway in the early 80s for cold weather training.

I don’t know when that started or how long it lasted but I know it happened back then.

And really. 700 Marines as a threat? That’s enough to set up and man a training base that regiment sized units could be rotated through for arctic training and area familiarization.

And yes. The USMC has an interest in that area. In the event of the Big Stupid, the USMC is slated to bulk up the nordic countries to prevent closure of the Baltic and North Sea lanes of comms.

Even if that’s no longer a thing, and I tend to be in that batch that believes the Big Stupid is about as probable as a black hole suddenly appearing and swallowing the planet, still...

700 Marines is no threat to anyone except the local beers and possibly the virtue of any willing ladies in that AO.

Annoyed enough to come begging us to pay for their defense so they can keep their socialist systems intact.

“the USMC is slated to bulk up the nordic countries to prevent closure of the Baltic and North Sea lanes of comms.”

That’
s the job of the USN and the USAF should the Europeans fail to do it themselves. But then only after overwhelming casualties and huge lost territory.

It’s not our job to protect those lazy, cowardly bastards.

And, like you said, the “Big Stupid” is about as likely as a black hole suddenly appearing and swallowing the entire planet.
