Opinion: Asylum row could bring down Angela Merkel's government
Deutsche Welle ^ | 14 June 2016 | Jens Thurau

A glaring rift has emerged between Angela Merkel's conservative CDU and its Bavarian CSU sister party over how to deal with asylum-seekers. The days of Germany's coalition government could be numbered.

Long story short, there's been a demand to 'fix' various problems in the asylum and migration crisis. New Interior Minister is CSU's Seehofer, and he has forty-odd solutions to be implemented. Merkel has put her foot down and said some of these simply will not happen. So this odd thing happened, Seehofer and the whole Bavarian CSU Party have stood up and said it'll happen or the Merkel coalition will collapse.

Whole episode has unfolded in the past two weeks, and they are trying to bring in a neutral party to negotiate the Seehofer list. If that fails, it's likely to bring a new election (bulk of the public actually in favor of this, bulk of political parties totally against new elections). It would end the Merkel period in an abrupt fashion, and likely result in election numbers making it near impossible to build a coalition

She should have her party host them in tents at their offices and homes.

Its a beautiful thing to see. :^)

The Trump method is that if it’s broke...you actually ought to resolve the problem by fixing it or dumping it. In this case, the Interior Minister has looked over the various issues and written around forty repairs.

The Merkel solution is what the teenagers in German now call ‘merkling’. It literally means you are in charge of something with the authority to run it, but you do basically nothing other than observing it and talking about it. They now use the term for mayors, school directors, the Chancellor, and just anyone who refuses to take charge and ensure programs work.

Trump also gives long standing Gordian Knots that attract his attention a mighty whack to cut through them.

The keepers of the Knot are “displaced”.

In this case....none of the political parties want a fresh election.

It would be lesser numbers for Merkel’s CDU Party and the left-of-center party (the SPD). It would have to come after the September Hessen/Bavaria state elections, which mean they’d both influence the outcome of the national election. And then the question is....would this entire election revolve around what to do with migrants and immigrants (something that the fall 2017 election sidestepped and avoided in discussion)?

Coalition-wise, it’d be awful hard to figure the way an election works, and how you’d form a coalition in this weakened state. Toss on the fact that Merkel would not be in the new election, and a new cast of characters would be formed in the leadership roles.

"‘merkling’."

Sounds like a good word for English to adopt/coopt.

typical politicians like Merkel, Ryan, McCain, etc... just don’t get it.

Trump takes what’s obvious and then magnifies it. Merkel and others try to hide the obvious with cheap slogans.
