Southern Baptists Call Off the Culture War
The Atlantic ^ | 6-16-2018 | Jonathan Merritt

America’s largest Protestant group moves to cut ties with the Republican Party and re-engage with mainstream culture.

It was immediately clear that change was afoot in Dallas. I’ve attended the annual gatherings of the Southern Baptist Convention dozens of times, but walking around the convention center this week, I was struck by how unfamiliar it all felt. When I was a child, the convention hall was a sea of silver combovers and smelled of denture paste. While the older, more traditionalist crowd was still present in Dallas, the younger, fresh-faced attendees now predominated.

“The generational shift happening in the SBC has thrust the group into the middle of an identity crisis,” says Barry Hankins, chair of the department of history at Baylor University and co-author of Baptists in America: A History. “The younger generation thinks differently than the old guard Christian right about culture and politics, and they are demanding change.”

To enact this change, young Baptists nominated 45-year old pastor J.D. Greear from North Carolina to be president of the denomination. In a campaign video, Greear called for “a new culture and a new posture in the Southern Baptist Convention.”

I do not particularly trust The Atlantic.

Can any Southern Baptist around here fill us in on what's going on? Thank you.

There are liberal evangelicals but that isn’t true of all of them.

Acceptance of leftism opens the door to SJW convergence.

SJW convergence kills organizations from the inside out.

Allow the first and the second is guaranteed.

Be of this world or of the Lord our God. It’s a binary solution set.

An organization that isn’t intrinsically conservative by nature sooner than later gets taken over by the Left.

Would be sad but not surprised to see it happen to the Southern Baptists.

“The Southern Baptist Convention” speaks for the Southern Baptist -Convention-. There is no hierarchy above the church. The convention selected a 40 something millenial mentality guy who is one of those celebrity-type preachers. He is famous for taking his first job heading up a church on the condition that “Baptist” was removed from the name.

Just another popstar evangelical shopping mall church type. So now the media is trying to pretend that the SBC is like the Vatican for Baptists.
The SBC is mostly a cooperative effort for missionary work, publications, etc. The sponsor a couple of seminaries.

No gospel? No salvation from death and the eternal exile from God? But..we have gender and melatonin skin balance in the participants of our rituals...if thats all the new SBC is about..it may as well be dead...but also consider the writer of the article.

That might be all he looks for...meaningless ritual...

Here’s a test to see where they or any other religious group really stands: Call up 1000 churches and ask if they will ‘gay marry’ you. Tell them you both attend the denomination or group elsewhere and are millionaires, willing to contribute a generous amount for a clandestine ceremony or whatever if the official stance is no ‘gay marriage’. And see what they say.

I predict none that say yes are going to have Southern Baptist in the name.

SBC wants to the next “Church of England”

They are going after the “much admired” Episcopal numbers.

In other words a silly group not to be taken seriously.

Liberal religion makes no real demands upon its followers. Its style over substance.

Mainline churches have been on the decline in America.

[...meaningless ritual...]

Worked in the home office of a particular church organization - I will not name them in the thread nor in FReepmail so don’t anyone bother asking. I was there for over 2 years.

EVERY SINGLE MONTH we had “church” in the office - I wondered how we got away with it (didn’t understand we were fully part of the church - at least at first I didn’t understand it). The services ran for an hour each time.

ANYWAYS, in OVER 2 years, NEVER, NOT ONCE did anyone EVER open a Bible and read from it.

NOT once. Ever.

Big surprise - a lot of the folks in the office supported ..... Obama for President in 2008.

LOTSA praise and worship songs. ZERO Bible influence. ZERO.

Yes, you WOULD know the denomination. NO, I will not name (see above).

Draw your own conclusions.....

Looks like the Southern Baptists will also have to untethered themselves from the Apostle Paul, who had Christians put to death.

However, actual murder is not near as bad, in the eyes of this Leftist fool, as an unsubstantiated allegations against Trump.

An I think these representatives of the various congregations are in for a surprise when they go back home.

There are rumblings in our evangelical denomination, also from millennials and other rumblings from those non-white and other nations.

I do not believe they are pro-gay or pro-abortion;however, there is too much along the line of social justice beliefs being infused. Think illegal aliens. The people of color in MY church voted for Obama/Hillary, or would have if they could have. I do not understand how they could do that except that they only watch “black” TV.

The good old boys in my denomination have a mutiny coming as they are not looking into new ways of spreading the gospel and building the Church. They are ignoring the young.

Just my humble .02, but the American corporate church spends far too much time (and money) trying to make itself relevant and too little time making God relevant.

The “politics” of religion in our modern culture constantly shift, but our Creator, his Son, and his Word are eternal and timeless. There will be no denominations in heaven.
