North Korea reportedly offered to abandon a key weapon — and it has nothing to do with nukes
Business Insider ^ | 18 Jun 2018 | Alex Lockie

North Korean diplomats talking to South Korean officials in the demilitarized border zone between the two countries reportedly offered to remove the North's long-range artillery guns, which have been a dagger pointed at Seoul's throat for decades.

Before North Korea tested its first nuclear weapon, before it even built its first facility to create fissile material, its artillery had established a strong deterrent against South Korea and the US.

North Korea is estimated to have thousands of massive artillery guns hidden in hardened shelters among the hills and mountains of the country's rugged terrain. Artillery batteries located within range of the South Korean capital of Seoul could kill tens of thousands of people every hour if war were to break out.

Accounts in South Korean media differ over who exactly proposed the latest measure, but it came at a general-level military dialogue, which hadn't happened for over a decade before.

The two nations, still technically at war after signing an armistice in the 1950s, met under the banner of "practically eliminate the danger of war," as South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to do on April 27 during their historic first summit.

North Korea's artillery guns have little to do with its nuclear weapons program, the elimination of which is the stated purpose of all recent North Korean diplomacy.

But the guns represent a substantial part of North Korea's threat to Seoul, perhaps acting as the main deterrent holding off a US or South Korean invasion during the multidecade military standoff.

The M-1978 (Koksan) is a 170 mm self-propelled (SP) gun of North Korean design and ... The gun has a range that would allow it to strike Seoul from the Korean ... making the weapon the world’s longest-ranged field artillery piece at the time.

Over and over I see on Twitter that Kim got everything for nothing. Trump got play and so on. However the N/S thaw is happening much faster than I thought possible.

Half truth.

In the current discussions directly between South Korea and North Korea at Panmunjon, South Korea requested, and north Korea accepted, moving their artillery back from the locations just north of the DMZ.

That is not an offer to “abandon” it’a massive amouunt of artillery, just move it back. In moving them back - if they actually do - they will like make more of them mobile, and easily relocated back to their present positions when and if North Korea decides to. “Abandom” them? No. That’s not what the North is agreeing to.

The request, and the North’s agreement, if fully carried out can reduce immediate tensions by lessening the North’s ability for a rapid fire start of hostilities, without its artillery sitting in range of Seoul - if that is how far back they actually move them.

Artillery is the great killer. That’s been true for a long, long time. If NK pulls them back, it tells the world that this is really happening.

I had doubts at first. But I am beginning to think this Nork thaw may snowball faster than anyone can imagine. Trump gave the communist Kim the disease of the dollar signs, and gave him an escape hatch from the past.

The rocket sled is off....

What’s hard to believe is where did they get all the money to buy the weapons. I know they used the money that was given to them by us and missle technology they sold. But they have more weapons than can be explained by that. A lot of it must have been given to them.

Just give 1/2 of them to South Korea and then both North and South Korea could out them on the Chinese border.

That being said, if true piece does break out between North and South Korea they should manufacture 1 million firework artillery shells that would make a epic fireworks display to celebrate the reunification.

“Over and over I see on Twitter that Kim got everything for nothing. Trump got play and so on. However the N/S thaw is happening much faster than I thought possible.”

I know what you mean but it might be like a new dam versus a 70-year-old dam, once the older dam starts to breach it will totally fail very quickly.

Kore a is a been waiting 70 years for this to happen and I think that if it is going to happen it’s going to be very fast.

I also think that the world should be a little bit easier on dictator Kim because he truly did inherit an evil government at the age of 26 and I think his only options were either to take controllability by rules that North Korea has followed for 60 years before the 3rd generation Kim took over.

Trump is right! It does appear to be a nice looking beach.

When Trump helps them convert the beaches into resort areas, it would be nice to let the tourists play with the guns. Imagine bragging to your friends after returning from vacation, telling them of firing artillery pieces and other fun stuff.

The Norks need money so badly that they will probably
offer to sell one of those artillery pieces to a tourist.
("Under the table" of course.)

I think that if it is going to happen it’s going to be very fast.

About 20 years ago our church went through several days of 24/7 prayer. I signed up for the 4 am hour so I could get my session in and then begin my commute to work.

I remember going to a world map and praying for each country, then I got to Korea.

Suddenly, a wave of spiritual understanding swept over me. I got in a flash that I would be praying with millions of fervant Koreans that were also praying for their two nations and that when the wall came down, the unification would happen quickly, as it had already been established in prayer.

I sat back and enjoyed the events of the Singapore Summit knowing the Hand of God was present and that our President is being used by God.

Scratch that off my list. I'm in California and can't even bring in a bullet.
