Trump Retreats on Separating Families, but Thousands Will Remain Apart

President Trump caved to enormous political pressure on Wednesday and signed an executive order meant to end the separation of families at the border by detaining parents and children together for an indefinite period.

“We’re going to have strong — very strong — borders, but we are going to keep the families together,” Mr. Trump said as he signed the order in the Oval Office. “I didn’t like the sight or the feeling of families being separated.”

But Justice Department officials said it was not clear whether the practice of separating families could resume after 20 days if a federal judge refuses to give the government the authority it wants to hold families together for a longer period.

What Trump did was asked the court to change the settlement order that requires children to be freed even if their parents still are detained for a refugee hearing.

I hope that either the court refuses or that the ACLU and a bunch of leftist state attorneys generals sue saying you cam’t hold the children and the solution is to release both children and parents.

If that happens, I expect Trump to hammer the Democrats and the courts and use it as an excuse to get more judicial appointments approved. Then propose a new law to be passed by the Republican House that would pull the legal rug out from under the court settlement.

This EO is only so that he could say he tried.

But I do not believe he will stop prosecuting the crime of illegal entry.

What we need is law that allows the Border Patrol to refuse entry in all cases where a visa cannot be presented. And allows immediate removal of those caught here illegally without judicial review or appeal.

Then those families would remain together.

If Republicans in Congress were worth a sh!t, they have it on his desk in 5 days.

But, alas, they are not worth a sh!t. So the stalemate will continue.
