Update, 4:10 p.m.: What Anchorage police described as an aggressive brown bear believed to have killed an Eagle River man and suspected of badly injuring another man had not been found as of Wednesday afternoon.

Biologists with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game searched for the animal earlier on Wednesday. As of 4 p.m., no one was in the field but biologists were putting together a plan for what to do next, said department spokesman Ken Marsh.

The body of Mike Soltis, an Eagle River man missing since Monday, was discovered in a brushy area close to the end of Hiland Road in Eagle River late Wednesday morning.

A member of the search party looking for him was mauled by a brown bear close to where the man's body was discovered. The searcher, who was hospitalized with what police described as serious injuries to his leg, wasn't immediately identified.

"It appears the brown bear was protecting the body (of Soltis) when it attacked a member of the search party," police wrote.

It sounds so normal when you put it that way.

And, for the bear, I suppose it is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuGeIQr2PFU

I came to a high place of darkness and light
The dividing line ran through the center of town
I hitched up my pony to a post on the right
Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down.

A man in the corner approached me for a match
I knew right away he was not ordinary
He said “Are you looking for something easy to catch ?”
I said “I got no money”. He said “That ain’t necessary”.

We set out that night for the cold in the North
I gave him my blanket he gave me his word
I said “Where are we going ?” He said “We’d be back by the fourth”
I said “That’s the best new that I’ve ever heard”.

I was thinking about turquoise I was thinking about gold
I was thinking about diamonds and the world’s biggest necklace
As we rode through the canyons through the devilish cold
I was thinking about Isis how she thought I was so reckless.

How she told me that one day we meet up again
And things would be different the next time we wed
If I only could hang on and just be her friend
I still can’t remember all the best things she said.

We came to the pyramids all embedded in ice
He said “There’s a body I’m trying to find
If I carry it out it’ll bring a good prize”
It was then that I knew what he had on his mind.

The wind it was howling and the snow was outrageous
We chopped through the night and we chopped through the dawn
When he died I was hoping that it wasn’t contagious
But I made up my mind that I had to go on.

I broke into the tomb but the casket was empty
There was no jewels no nothing I felt I’d been had
When I saw that my partner was just being friendly
When I took up his offer I must-a been mad.

How is it possible that each member of the search party wasn’t well armed (and fully capable of killing the bear)?

I don’t know much about that world, but something like that with hard-cast bullets always seemed appropriate. Or something belt-fed.

I’ve never read his books but I’ve listened to many podcasts he’s been on and what he says really creeps me out.

I’ve been told by people from Alaska and wild places in the Pacific Northwest and Canada that it is normal there for humans to be a food source.

Black bears were re-introduced to several wilderness areas nearby a few years ago-they have been caught on camera 20 miles from this rural area a couple of times in the last few months-I’m not nervous-yet...

I have a lib sister-in-law by marriage who camps a lot in the Adirondacks, where the bears are black, rather than brown. One year she camped in Alaska, and then mentioned some anti-gun sentiments. I told her how lucky she was.

She’s vigorous, outdoorsy, and fun to be around, but not a deep thinker. She was really excited about Hillary’s “What Happened.”

The vicious cycle.

Man cuts back forests, lessening food supply for denizens.

Man hunts small game, possibly wiping out food supply for denizens.

Man runs into denizen and thinks he is smarter. More food for denizen.

Man hunt ‘killer denizen’ to punish for acting like he is wired to act.

Man continue kill denizen while ‘other’ man breeds same and sets free in the wild to start the cycle all over.

Listened to him on Coast to Coast. Supposedly the ratings are big when he’s on and on-demand. Watch his Youtube videos especially when he was in a conference in Australia and the crowd was stunned this stuff happened within an 80 year time frame in their own backyard.

There was one interview he did, I forgot which vid it was and he stated that once you are lost in the forest, the Dept of Forestry or Park Rangers will NOT record your disappearance, i kid you not.

They will just hand your info to the Sheriff or nearby military base. I was stunned when I heard that and the interviewer pushed him “is this true?’ When he was writing his books and making the reports, he asked a few Park rangers if he could share their reports. They ALL (the federal parks) said it will cost HIM $35000 just for THEM to give it to him, which was ridiculous. Meaning the Park Rangers and DNR know a LOT of people go missing every day...

Your SIL has a charmed life for certain-never heard of anyone who went on “real” camping trips unarmed-I certainly don’t-my 1st hubby and I camped all over Texas and New Mexico-took our cub, too when she was a kid-but even in the Guadalupe Mountains we were both armed because of the black bears there...

I agree. She was counting on her husband (wife's brother, big guy) to protect her. That usually works with humans... but grizzlies? Come on, lady.
