Russia Warns of a 'Tough Response' to Creation of US Space Force
Moscow Times ^ | June 2018 | Reuters

Russia has pledged severe repercussions if President Donald Trump’s order to set up a new, space-oriented military branch violates a treaty banning nuclear weapons in the cosmos.

Trump said this week he will establish a sixth branch of the military named the “Space Force,” pending budgetary approval from the U.S. Congress. The idea could require the U.S. to withdraw from the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which prohibits the deployment of weapons of mass destruction but not conventional arms in space.

Viktor Bondarev, head of the Committee on Defense and Security of Russia's upper parliamentary house, told the state-run RIA Novosti news agency he hoped “there’s still remnants of common sense in the American political elite” that would compel the U.S. to remain in the pact.

“But if the U.S. withdraws from the treaty, then of course, not only ours but other states will follow with a tough response aimed at ensuring global security,” Bondarev told RIA on Tuesday.

Russia has been working their “strong response” for decades.

They’re incapable of moving any faster.

Probably the best thing they could have said, was, nothing. Even if they had the capacity to match the US effort they should still have said nothing. The same goes for most comments on social media. Generally, the best response is nothing at all.

This feels like Reagan and Star Wars and Gorbachev all over again. The Russians talk tough, but they cannot compete. We win if we try to win. If they try to win, they collapse.

The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 only bans WMDs in space. I don’t think it even prohibits kinetic energy weapons. A “Space Force” on its own does not violate it.

You would not need nuclear weapons in space.

A steel rod dropped from space and that could be guided to a target would do a lot of damage upon impact (without any radiation).

I am not sure if weaponizing space is a good thing or not, nor am I sure the Russians (or Chinese) have not already done so. Perhaps the President has received a briefing where he has been told that both Russian and China already have weapons in space. Which would help explain his action.

IIRC, Russia can only afford one aircraft carrier, and even that got towed to port on it's last deployment.

Russia is broke; they can't afford to build squat. What we have here is a textbook example of Sun Tzu's admonishment in The Art of War: "When weak, appear strong."

Amazing! This story from the Moscow Times has the same tone, Trump bashing, Anti-Americanism and fake news content as a story from the New York Times. They could literally take the newspaper name off and put New York Times on and you would not know the difference.

I believe we used Rods from God to take out North Korea’s underground nuclear test site killing all those scientists of theirs. That’s why they decided to come meet us at the bargaining table.

nor am I sure the Russians (or Chinese) have not already done so

Wikipedia says "China's anti-satellite (ASAT) program has been under development since 1964." Russia has done the same for the same amount of time. It's long past time to acknowledge this openly and create a MAD capability.

The Russians talk tough, but they cannot compete.

...and yet NASA still imports rocket engines from Russia, without which there would be no American space launches.
