“If people present to the border and request asylum, we can’t just send them back.”
People seeking asylum are supposed to do so in the first country they cross the border of.
They should be turned back into Mexico.
Border patrol should print out Mexican applications for asylum and send them back over the border with the applications.
That works for me. Of course that’s not the policy they have chosen to adopt. There should be no ability to show up at the border and demand asylum.
You should have to go to an embassy or a consulate.
Showing up at the border should get you a swift kick on the butt as you are sent packing back into the country you’re trying to enter from.

The “should” be but they can’t so this is good idea.
