He’s right. Historically accurate.

Ack. If ignorance were a virtue this guy would be a saint. Fools like this play right into the hands of the other side.

“In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

Inscription over the Lincoln Memorial.

Not a word about slavery.
You need to do your homework before you go calling Stewart a fool. He is exactly right on this and on his opposition to illegal immigration which never Trumpers like you kept quiet on for all these years.

Maybe you should stop watching MSNBC, CNN, and RIOOs like Ryanair McConnell.

It is not like the the “Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union” mentions the right to own slaves a dozen times.

it only declares their right to own slaves 6 times.

There were a lot of people in the North called Copperheads that couldn’t give two poops about slavery, believe it or not.

No it wasn’t. It was about taxes. The bulk of federal revenues came from tariffs. The south was a big importer exporter and their tax dollars comprised about 70-80 of federal revenues. the north did not want to lose its tax base and fought to keep it. Most southerners did not own slaves. You are unlikely to fight over something you don’t own but you will fight over tax dollars. If you remember, it is what drove the revolution that started the whole thing. Interesting to consider that the founding fathers were upset of single digit taxes.

you right. However, schools in south still teach that civil war was more than slavery...live in SC and son who went to school here to prove it.

Lincoln actually came out in support the original proposal of a 13th Amendment. The South rejected it, because to them, because it didn’t address the issue of taxation, tariffs on imports and exports.

Here is the text of the proposed amendment that Lincoln supported:

No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.

Which “state’s right” in particular?

The right to secede.

I’ve heard a number of people in Tennessee say the Civil War wasn’t about slavery.

Corey would be a great senator, and he’s right. It wasn’t all about slavery.

He’s no fool, this is smart strategy on Corey Stewart’s part. I don’t think I’d do a good job of explaining it, plus “loose lips sink ships”. But it’s smart, very smart.

“Democrats call on Republicans to denounce Stewart’s racist comments about the Civil War.”

Lincoln didn’t support the Corwin Amendment - he only said that he had “no objection”.

The issue of state’s right is of primary importance and core foundational piece of our republic. It’s worth every bit of bandwidth. Don’t like the discussion? Then leave.
