Pelosi says the gavel makes all the difference in the world. As we’ve seen since the GOP took control of the House in 2011, the gavel only makes a difference if it is wielded by someone who wants to make a difference. Hence the miserable performance by John Boehlert and Paul Ryan.

If Pelosi or any other Democrat is selected by the House to be Speaker in January 2019 we can be certain the gavel will be used forcefully and with effect.
