Russian strongman Vladimir Putin on Monday congratulated Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election triumph in a phone call, after saying the result showed the Turkish leader's "great political authority" and mass support.

On the call Putin and Erdogan confirmed their interest in "deepening partnership ties between the two countries", the Kremlin said, singling out priority projects such as the TurkStream gas pipeline and Turkey's first nuclear power plant being built by Moscow.

In a telegram earlier Monday, Putin had "stressed that the results of the vote fully speak of Recep Tayyip Erdogan's great political authority (and) mass support of the course conducted under his leadership to solve Turkey's pressing social and economic tasks (and) strengthen the country's position in the international arena."

I think Erdogan believes he’s the Mahdi. This won’t disabuse him of that notion.

All despots possess “great political authority”, exercised by ruthlessly suppressing all opposition and clinging to dogmatic proclamations as to their “absolute” right to rule, rather than govern.

Erdogan is probably not as doctrinaire as Stalin, but he is moving up in the rankings pretty fast. In fact, the failure of the ISIS to establish a caliphate makes his own ambitions to restore the Ottoman Empire that much more feasible, in his calculation.

Which puts Erdogan at loggerheads with the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is exercising its expansionist powers at Turkey’a very borders.

I was thinking the same thing about the phrase - it can sound like a compliment but means nothing. And, if Obama had said it to Erdogan, the media would have praised him for his abilities at “diplomacy” - the smartest man in the world knows exactly what to say to every foreign leader. But they’d call for impeachment if the undiplomatic Trump said the same thing to Erdogan.

So Trump has good reason to congratulate Erdogan on his election victory.

IMO Putin and Trump share a certain trait, that is, they kind of enjoy making statements that tweak the media reporting of same. Trump, of course, lots more than Putin.
