Feds to begin distributing grant money to non-sanctuary cities

The Justice Department said Wednesday it has begun distributing hundreds of millions of dollars in grant money that had been tied up in a major court battle over sanctuary cities.

Byrne Justice Assistance Grants are used by localities and police departments across the nation to pay for equipment, training, personnel or other pressing needs.

The Trump administration last year said it would condition the money on localities’ willingness to cooperate in holding illegal immigrants for pickup by federal deportation officers. Chicago sued, saying the conditions weren’t part of federal law.

A common sense ruling by the appeals court slapping this district court judge down on his nation wide stay.

“Chicago sued, saying the conditions weren’t part of federal law.”

Um, I don’t think sanctuary cities are part of federal law.

Does the code provide for good/bad behavior distinctions in the distributions? We might WANT an emperor but to actually get him could be dangerous. I’d sooner see the code followed and used to accuse treason, etc.

We must secure the courts with “Originalists" no more reading compassion & feelings and “in today's society” into our Constitution.

We don't win wars anymore because we play by different rules than the enemy. Maybe we should learn something from that?

What do you win with the war?

It didn’t say a thing about its own time either. Big hint to the timeless when it was dated “In the year of our Lord.”

Every time a black robed tyrant issues law from the bench, dozens of new laws must be created to navavigate the mess they create.

$200 million? Pfft! It is a start. Of course Congress is unlikely to amend existing law to allow the President to withhold financial aid to sanctuary cities that would truly force a change in policy.

In this case code should be clear. Don’t fix tyrant A with tyrant B.

“Does the code provide for good/bad behavior distinctions in the distributions”

I’m not sure about the wording, but I would presume that if a municipality refuses to do the work that the Feds would pay them to do, they oughtn’t to accept the money. Alternatively, the Feds should not pay them.

That and framing the debate.

We are caring for children whose criminal parents are in jail on immigration charges, rather than jailing them with their parents and God knows what other criminals.

They frame the debate as: We are tearing babies from their mother’s arms.

And we LET them!!!

Its up to Congress to clean up a sloppy dole. If it’s only a matter of whose morals the Calvinball is played around, a central problem remains unresolved.

Just watch the cities change their minds if they hold the money back....

We need to stop sending all of the money to Washington just to have it doled at at political whim regardless of how it impacts issues important to us.

Think we can get the other side to agree to that. </sarc>

No, a real common sense ruling would be - return these $$ to the taxpayers, because where in the Constitution can FedGov give any $$ to random cities? Much less sanctuary cities?
