I don’t see anything in the Constitution that says a Supreme Court nominee must have meetings with anybody from any political party before a nomination or vote.

Yes, this is essentially a modern invention.

All the Senate legally has to do is vote up or down..............

Article II, section 2 provides that the president “shall nominate, and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint … judges of the Supreme Court.”
