California bans local soda taxes

California cities and counties won’t be allowed to tax soda for the next 12 years after Gov. Jerry Brown signed fast-moving legislation Thursday.

The bill, which was first unveiled Saturday evening, prohibits local governments from imposing new taxes on soda until 2031. It comes after a deal was struck between legislators and business and labor interests who agreed to remove an initiative from the Nov. 6 statewide ballot that would have restricted cities and counties from raising any taxes without a supermajority vote of local citizens.

I guess the state doesn't like cities and counties cutting in on its business.

Apparently liberals are not complete idiots. They know when something isn’t working.

It’s the things that hurt in the long run their antenna doesn’t work very well for.

I wonder how soda sales have been affected.

We were in Burbank last summer for our daughter’s wedding and I went to the store to get a case or three of soda. I saw the tax and said, never mind. I wonder who else did that.

an initiative from the Nov. 6 statewide ballot that would have restricted cities and counties from raising any taxes without a supermajority vote of local citizens

Some deal for the people. They knew damnwell that it would have passed and they were terrified that it would, so they exchanged the minuscule amount of soda tax to be able to retain the ability to raise taxes without the approval of the citizenry. Guess they sat up and took notice when the citizens got the repeal of the gas tax on the ballot.

I’m surprised. Maybe they noticed how soda sales sank in various other cities that did add the soda tax.
Ex-NY Mayor Nanny Bloomberg is not gonna like that one bit.
He’s thinking about challenging Pres. Trump in 2020.

They don’t want another Prop 13.

But, they’re gonna get one.

Gas tax repeal and Constitutional Amendment making them not able to raise gas taxes again without a vote/majority approval.

Guess we’ll take the soda win too...but they’ll start taxing underwear next.

They want rid of this ballot measure and could careless about about people paying a soda tax.

“In the meantime, don’t be fooled by the headlines you are seeing. Jerry Brown didn’t sign that bill to protect you from higher taxes. He signed it to make sure they could keep raising the rest of your taxes.”

“Apparently liberals are not complete idiots.”

All evidence to the contrary.
