The State Department has requested that US Marines be sent to Taiwan to help safeguard America's de facto embassy there, two US officials tell CNN, prompting China to urge the US to "exercise caution."

*snip*

If the request is granted, it will be the first time in nearly 40 years that US Marines will be guarding a diplomatic post in Taiwan.

So now China is (indirectly) telling us where we can and can't send our Marine guards. I hope that Trump won't go all wobbly here. But I don't think he will. If anything, he'll probably send twice as many Marines as requested.

I hear you. I hate going there (CNN) myself. But then again I don’t want to get Free Republic in trouble for excerpting too much of an article.

I think there is some kind of law about how much you can fairly excerpt. In the past I’ve searched for that law, but so far no luck. Perhaps someone who knows more about this than I do can clue me in.

Ha! That’s very politically incorrect, and also very true. I’m just a dumb Hunky. But I sure don’t see what lasting political value we gained when Nixon went with his “one-China” policy.

All we seemed to have gained was cheap imports, imports that helped destroy our industrial base.

Taiwan is, of course, an island and not part of the Asian land mass. So perhaps Vizzini’s quote doesn’t quite apply. But it sure does apply to Afghanistan and Iraq (I’m looking at you, George W. Bush).

I don’t know how they determine who guards the embassies, but I was at the US Embassy in Manila a few years ago. The only American I saw, was one female consular officer. Every every single solitary other worker there, were all Filipino civilians, including the guards, and it was the Philippine Army guarding the outer perimeter.

Taiwan and also the South China Sea will be strictly NavAir battles.

And due to China, it is likely inevitable. Best to prepare.

It was Jimmy Carter that broke relations with Taiwan. It is past time to have a 2 China policy. Rename the American Institute of Taiwan to US Embassy.

True. But it was Nixon who first said that there was but one China. And by that he was essentially acknowledging Red China’s claim on Taiwan.

By the way, I agree with you that it’s time for a two-China policy. Enough of the one-China charade.

The US once had an embassy in Taipei. I know because I helped lead a delegation of American students studying there on a protest against the US recognizing Red China in July 1971.

Weird thing was that for a US embassy in a country of one of America’s greatest friends, the front door window was about 6 inches high and 16 inches wide, like a gin-joint of the roaring 20’s.

Well, we did the protest, made national TV on the island, and were local heroes at Chengchi University. My wonderful teacher Lillian Chao cried in class.

Hey Spike Lee. WE DID THE RIGHT THING! STOOD UP FOR FREEDOM.

(One of our members was US Army - combat Bronze Star for taking out a communist bunker with a grenade launcher. No slackers in our group).

Vietnam was flanked by China enabling us to leave and prevent the Russian intrusion

Nixon was in China to end the war in Vietnam.

Frankly. I’d have some U.S. military ON Taiwan, as a trip-wire warning to China against ever using force to settle the political issue between Taiwan and China.
