Protests after Portland State University police shoot, kill Navy veteran

Dozens of protesters marched through the streets of Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, demanding action after Portland State University police shot and killed a Navy veteran. Cellphone video captured the early Friday incident when, witnesses say, Jason Washington was trying to break up a fight.

It appears Washington's gun fell from its holster before police shot him.

This isn't the first time tensions have risen at the university over armed campus safety officers.

Students have been strongly opposed since the policy began in 2015.

One protester said she feared that it was only a matter of time before someone got killed.

CBS News correspondent David Begnaud reports the incident occurred Friday after a fight started to escalate outside a sports bar. According to witnesses, the 45-year-old Washington, who is seen in cellphone video carrying a gun on his right hip, tried to intervene, but fell during the scuffle.

Washington's gun apparently fell from its holster. Witnesses said campus police opened fire when he tried to pick it up.

Washington was a U.S. Navy veteran who worked for the post office. Police told reporters he had a concealed carry permit for his handgun.

Bad stuff happens at bar fights.

Note to self. If I drop my gun, DO NOT pick it up in front of cops.

University police forces tend to scrape the bottom of the barrel for recruits.

The cop involved in the highly publicized shoot-the-fleeing-suspect-in-the-back incident had gotten fired from the University of Pittsburgh police force.

Do not try to break up bar fights. They could be brothers and then you have to take on both of them.

They shot an innocent man who had a legal right to carry.

These bastards are MURDERERS and I don’t give one single damn about their contemptible orders. They do NOT have a right to kill every single person who legally carries.

THIS is why we have a Second Amendment in the first place and that’s so we can defend ourselves from our own government.

In a growing number of jurisdictions it is clearly necessary for law abiding citizens to arm themselves and defend against the criminal gang that hides behind a badge.

Exactly. They are basically domestics.

Over react much?

If I’m a cop at a late night drunken bar fight, and some clown disobeys a lawful order AND picks up a weapon?

That’s a shootin’.

A terrible tragedy. Looks like the victim is a white guy, right? That’s why it’s not a headline, right? The MSM isn’t getting in a huff about this; doesn’t fit the narrative. Are the white, gun permitted veterans going to riot and burn down the campus?

A buddy of mine worked at a McDonalds just a half-block off of the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Like most of those establishments they offered free coffee to police officers. But when the Pitt campus cops would come in he’d shake his head and tell them “free coffee is only for REAL cops!”

I told him he probably shouldn’t set foot on campus after that

I’m certain the police on the Internal Affairs board will find their fellow cop did a righteous shoot.

“University police forces tend to scrape the bottom of the barrel for recruits.”

Unfortunately, not just university police forces. Trigger happy, scared of their own shadows, everyone sucks but them, shoot first then figure out later what was going on...makes you feel all warm and fuzzy,

No, the victim is black. Sorry to say he made a bad decision intervening in the fight with a loosely secured handgun.

Under Pennsylvania law, you are correct. They have all of the same powers as any municipal police force.

My friend’s comment was a shot at their competence.

I personally get very nervous whenever I see Help Wanted ads seeking police officers at very low salaries. You are not going to attract quality people, and future corruption is almost a given if these guys can barely pay their rent.

Hang on everyone.. I worked at a university. The police were academy trained peace officers, same training as city cops in my jurisiction. They were up to date on all facets of policing. Most of them were either newly trained, or former city cops who wanted a little less stress and danger.

They were armed, there were no incidents, and respected. The hardest part of their job was dealing with rich, entitled spoiled snow flakes. I don’t know about the individuals or the force in Portland, but i wouldnt stereotype the all the campus police. thank you

The starting pay for even good PDs is often VERY low——NYPD,for example. They give very small pay increases as you stay on the job,but the longer you stay the larger the increase, until you reach maximum.

I have no idea what the University PDs pay.
