It seems the state of South Carolina wants to ensure it doesnt fall short of the goals of its economic development agency for lack of workers.
Officials plan to create a statewide personal information data warehouse to track children and funnel them into the workforce.
The independent South Carolina Policy Council, which opposes the plan, noted it was contained in a budget bill passed by the legislature.
The warehouse plan, the council asserted, is vague, the permissions are sweeping, and the accountability mechanisms are completely absent.
The council said the main purpose of the data warehouse is to track children and funnel them into the workforce.
The data will be used to shape policy and funding decisions on everything from preschool to the workforce and will link workforce, industry and education data to meet the goals of the agency.
Lawmakers and their staff would have direct access to the data, which would be managed by an unaccountable board of government officials, the council said.

Plans in the works for passing out SOMA to all
Funnel children into the workforce? Sorry, it sounds like hyperbole and hysteria to me.
The SCPC has been a thorn in the legislature's side for years.
It works in Germany, Japan and South Korea. Not everyone in those countries are allowed to go to college.
Sounds like the European model of education. Germany is particularly famous for this kind of “ funneling”. I bet the Dims came up with this, given their love of all things European.
Yea but South Carolina? Being from NJ, I love the state and hope to move there one day (soon) however, this stinks of state planning that is probably tied to funding from the gubmint and ultimately us taxpayers.
Not everyone should go to college. There are people in the trades that make more than a lot of college grads
I totally agree with that, as long as it is a choice that the student wants. I hope this does not turn out to be something that is guided so much it doesn’t leave other options.
And nobody in government has any business detirmining who goes where.
Exactly.
That is true, I don’t agree with that either and never have. College is not for everyone, and we need skilled people for the trades and other jobs.
I’ve been saying that since before Mike Rowe was a household name.
In 1st grade you were thoroughly evaluated and it was determined that with your strong back and limited interest in human potential that we’d funnel you into humping burger boxes up the stairs for the robot burger flippers. Robots that can negotiate stairs are expensive. The burger flippers are cheap.
Sorry, no opportunity for advancement or innovation, you’re just a humper. Til the day you die. Please note we’ve re-labeled you as MC-1984-999 for the convenience of the store to which you’ve been assigned.
Sorry to inform you that you’ve also been assigned to the non-procreation pool and since you cannot be assigned a child unit there is no necessity for a life-partner so accordingly your living-units are set to minimal needs for one. Please attend the next available neutering appointment in your area.
Your Humper bunk is pre-assigned at Unit 1283a-3. Don’t forget your chip implant upon arrival.
Have a nice life.
The Funneling Board
Sorry - couldn’t sleep ... going to try again. You’re right about trades but this sounds far more sinister than trade schools. ;-)
Orwellian, more like.
“And nobody in government has any business detirmining who goes where.”
Absolutely right.
This nonsense smacks of ‘it takes a village’, very Hillaryesque.
Disappointing the great state of South Carolina would even think about something like this.
Its not the government. Its parents, its culture. After all we have kids graduating from college with degrees in Human Sexuality, Womens Studies, Ancient Religions, Poetry of the Third World etc with a hundreds thousand dollars in student debt and no chance of finding a job.
Its time to start telling people all work s good, honorable and necessary. We have to stop lowering standards in colleges, we have to stop telling people that a college degree is the only way to get ahead.
Try to find a good carpenter these days. Do they even have shop in school these days?
In Germany, when I was there, tested the children twice to see if they were college qualified. For those not equipped for college were then taught a vocational skill. It worked.
