Michigan judge rules kids don't have a fundamental right to literacy

A Michigan judge ruled last week that children do not have a fundamental right to learn how to read and write.

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Public Counsel, the nation's largest public interest law firm, on behalf of Detroit students that sought to hold state authorities, including Gov. Rick Snyder (R), accountable for what plaintiffs alleged were systemic failures depriving children of their right to literacy, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"I'm shocked," said Ivy Bailey, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, the newspaper reported. "The message that it sends is that education is not important. And it sends the message that we don't care if you're literate or not."

And Michigan also wants to lower the voting age to 16. Maybe print the ballots in cursive?

So, judges have ruled that the police do not have to protect you and that teachers do not have to teach you, even though we pay them to do those very jobs, including the judges.

Got to love the government! (/s)

Judges have ruled what a wise man once said.. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.. IOW No more frivolous lawsuits because Johnny can't read.

Children in Michigan have the fundamental right of literacy in Arabic. Just open a few madrassas and study the Koran and recite Sharia law.

AND IF ANY OF THEM BALK, BEAT THEM REGULARLY.

That will take care of the problem.

Good. This ruling can be used to kick troublemakers out of school. If they are disruptive, they have no “right” to be in school.

We are not slaves. Slaves were “prevented” from reading and writing.

I am sure that there are children who learn to read and write in the Detroit public school systems. But, you cannot unscrew to top of your head and drop in education. It’s a two way proposition. The child needs to put in SOME effort.

The judge is correct.

People do not have a right to other people’s things.

Rights are not arbitrary things. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are based on natural rights.

Those are rights that belong to people by their existence.

Such rights include life, liberty, and property.

A right is something that can be violated, but not removed.

The point is a government may take your life, liberty, and property, but they often do so illegitimately.

The only decent thing to do would be to get the government out of the schooling business entirely, since the government’s employees/systems have no obligation to achieve any results.

A system in which parents kept their own money and bought (or received as private charity) schooling for their children on their own initiative could not be worse than what we have now.

Michigan like most states guarantees children a free public education, and education requires literacy. From the Michigan Constitution, ratified in 1963:

Article VIII § 2

The legislature shall maintain and support a system of free public elementary and secondary schools as defined by law. Every school district shall provide for the education of its pupils without discrimination as to religion, creed, race, color or national origin.

Some kids have learning disabilities and some kids with learning disabilities go to college. None of them are forced to fail but it’s the thought that counts.

Exactly. Both my children were reading before they were five years old. they learned at home. Parents have a responsibility to raise up their children properly and to see that they are learning. It is the responsibility of the state to offer basic instruction but it all begins at home.

It's not in the Constitution, but it's been enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, abortion on demand, literacy, and a great deal at Main Street Chrysler-Plymouth.
