State Department's Request to Send Marines to Taiwan Irks China

A Chinese official is warning the U.S. to "exercise caution" following a report that the State Department wants to send a small team of Marines to guard a diplomatic facility in Taiwan.

The State Department requested that a Marine Security Guard detachment be dispatched to the American Institute in Taiwan, a de facto embassy in Taipei City, CNN reported Friday.

The news prompted a swift response from a Chinese foreign ministry official, who reminded Americans of the "one-China policy" meant to prevent the U.S. from having direct diplomatic or military exchanges with Taiwan.

"[Those] are the political preconditions for China-U.S. relations," Lu Kang, a ministry spokesman, said in a press conference Friday. "The U.S. ... knows it should exercise caution on this issue to avoid affecting overall bilateral ties."

Maj. Brian Block, a Marine spokesman at the Pentagon, deferred all questions about the State Department's request to that agency.

A State Department official, who spoke to Military.com on condition of anonymity, stressed that there is "no change to our 'one-China' policy based on the three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act."

Taiwan is a democracy, PRC is not. And while they weren't much of one up through the 90's, they are one now and deserved of being re-elevated to full diplomatic ties.

The PRC can just deal with that.

Reply should be: “We are.”

And why does Communist China even know of this request? (Rhetorical question). The Marines should have just shown up and China could have faced a fait accompli.

China should emulate Taiwan, not try to absorb it.

Guard it from whom?

These detachments guard the classified spaces and are responsible for classified material destruction in the event of an occupation.

Occupation by whom? Does this have any purpose other than annoying China?

Occupation by anyone; from an employee gone nuts to an assault external to the compound. Embassies around the world have detachments. Most countries operate this way in order to protect classified/sensitive information within their facilities.

As an example the British, French, Russian, Chinese, Venezuelan, Cuban, et. al., have military detachments at their missions at the U.N. for the same purpose.

I get the feeling this is new information to you?

Everything not China irks China. China’s so-called “one-china” policy is their one-world policy.

The time to leave them holding the bag and up to their armpits in poisoned dog food is now. This “trade war” talk is crap. It’s always been a war to the Chinese, at least what passes for them since Mao.

Amazing how utterly useless and lazy and gutless were the presidencies since Bush, Sr. Especially the last three. Bush was a total worthless POS. Obama? Need I say more? Clinton, we know sold us out.

Trump is the Lincoln of our time. He knows this is a critical crossroads.

We are in a civil war. The left vs the right. Liberals vs conservatives. America hating vs America loving etc.

Only one side will win. Trump knows there will be no compromise. This is it. Either we lead the world or the world will lead us.

Obama occurred because we drifted into mediocrity as a country. Then comes Trump who is a short period of time wakes us up.

I’m anxious to hear what the second quarter GDP will be.

Correct, period. MSGs actually do just that, its just their proximity to the rest of the mission which blurs that simple role. Nothing like hearing a MSG hat found in someone’s office to let you know their safe space was unsecured.

There are some in the “State” dept. who are not
above leaking this sort of thing to make Trump’s
life harder.

It’s provocative but so is building those islands. Dutarte should take them over and then see what happens.

The PRC needs an attitude adjustment and DJT is working on that with his trade policy.

Selecting Bush as VP was Reagan's biggest mistake that I'm sure was pushed on him by the RINOs.

No. No surprises. And by “Trump” telling them and then doing it, brings far more grit to the table. The US is not to be trifled with, ANYMORE!

The proper response to Communist China’s objection to the US sending a small group of Marines to the Republic of China is to send an entire combat division of Marines to the Republic of China.

As if annoying China isn’t a pretty good reason unto itself.
