The Hill ^ | June 29, 2018 | John R. Lott, Jr.

It really is true that there’s been a decline in political civility in recent years. Some say it started with Robert Bork’s 1987 Supreme Court confirmation battle. Whenever it started, we seem to have a hit an all-time low.

Because Obama’s OFA and other Soros-funded groups can’t think of anything other than to agitate. It’s just a reflection of stupidity on the left.

If you support the NRA, you’re a murderer. If you want border security and a wall, you’re a racist. If you encourage and follow biblical standards of morality, you’re a bigot or homophobe. If you don’t agree with liberals on everything, you’re just a hater. No debate, no discussion, no compromise.

If you read the Sandburg anecdotal biography of Abraham Lincoln you will clearly see that as far back as the first Republican primary and election, that being Abraham Lincoln, the vile verbal and illustrative abuse was clearly evident, and even before that it appears to be a mainstay tactic in political discourse.

Oh, fer pete’s sake. If the author thinks incivility is new, his education is sadly lacking. He should take a look at some of the broadsides and political cartoons from our founding. Many of those are vicious, scurilous, slanderous. Some are accurate.
And some are darn funny.

Incivility is hardly new, dude. You just don’t like being on the losing end of it.

It started long before Bork. They just don't like being on the receiving end of it :-)

The all time low in civility began at Fort Sumpter.

>>>as the size and scope of the federal government increases, interest groups will spend more on elections in an effort to influence the levers of government<<<

In other words, we're losing. :(

Check out the 1836 political cartoon.

The Vice President Who Almost Wasn’t for the Love of a Forbidden Woman

Which also reminded me how to properly spell scurrilous.

Civility died in 1972 when the Democrats adopted Rules for Radicals as their playbook.

In 2016 we quit bringing a knife to the gunfight.

From Aaron Burr killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel, to to John Quincy Adams calling Andrew Jackson's wife an Adultress whore, to Preston Brooks caning Charles Sumner on the Senate floor, politics in the US has always been a dirty business.

In reality, CIVILITY is a recent political happening...right after World War II, so many Republicans and Democrats shared the same wartime experiences that somehow political differences paled in comparison to being brothers in arms.

In the late 1940's/ early 1950's, John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon were best friends. Both were Navy veterans. When JFK almost died of an illness, it was Richard Nixon who stayed by his side. They only became political enemies after Nixon was selected Vice-President.

Even then, Nixon had JFK's kids over once to let them visit the white House in the early 1970's.

I think they're bouncing between depression and anger.

They'll start bargaining if and when they lose big this November.
