23 years? They’re as slower with justice as our system.
It’s nice to see not everybody in the entire world is completely stupid.
He’s been on Japan’s death row for more than 20 years.
They don’t tell you it’s your Big Day until just before they take you to meet Mr. Noose.
No chance the hangman screws up and his neck is not broken.
Much less complicated than needles and drugs.

Japanese Jail for 23 years, they wanted him to PAY before he died!
That surprised me too———I would have thought he would have been gone years ago.
Heh ... with this difference: the Japanese per one claim I’ve seen don’t tell you when they’ve decided to execute you. No building up to it, just every single day as if it were your last. Every single day.
Presumably with no fancy meals to give you warning.
Talk about stress....
Hai! This excerent point! LOL
But it really is an excellent point.
For everyone commenting on the long wait, the reason is right there in the story.
At the time, this was an unheard of and shocking attack.
I think asahara means a-hole in Japanese.
You got that right... Prison here (Japan) is NO TV, NO visitation, no talking to others, every day forced cleaning of anything/everything, NO special treatment (like back in the states), and sleeping on the floor with futons (which is torture in itself)...
I believe I’ve read that the ONLY incentive is that they have some kind of vocational training while in prison (like license plate making >.<...).. lol
You also cannot sleep or lie down during the day. You must sit erect, no slouching, leaning, etc.
Executions are not carried out until all trials and appeals for all related crimes and defendants have run out.
The last one ran out in January.
Thats when could be tomorrow...could be in an hour... starts.
I didn’t know Japan had the death penalty.
“Good night, Shoko. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.”
In Japan, they do not give an execution date... they make them sit it out, worrying day by day...
