On this Independence Day, lets go ahead and admit that 2018 has not been the most uplifting year.
Since January, there have been at least 23 shootings that left someone injured or killed at a school in the United States. As of last week, at least 2,000 minors separated from their parents were in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services, with no clear path to reunification. The past several months have seen high-profile instances of outright racial harassment and a much-bemoaned downturn in civility.
Income levels are stagnating, and inequality is soaring. A growing number of Americans despair of ever achieving the American Dream. The United Nations has reported on the United States rates of youth poverty, infant mortality and incarceration the highest in the developed world.
And each time a fresh outrage emerges or a disappointing piece of news breaks, a chorus rises up from politicians and everyday citizens alike: This is not who we are. Americans dont keep children in cages. Americans dont ask travelers for their citizenship papers. Americans dont turn away the huddled masses. Americans dont elect white nationalists to political office.
Except: We do.
Of course this is who we are. The truthful response is obvious and tautological: If this werent who we are, then it wouldnt be happening. We Americans are doing these things or, at the very least, seeing them done in our names.
And those who say that this isnt who we are are forgetting who weve always been. To say that this it not the real America is to forget our countrys past. The United States has been a country of land grabs, of slavery, of forced migration and the separation of families as a matter of public policy.

They think we havent felt this way with bammy and the thought of hitlery in power.
Yep, Obama was the wrong direction and the citizens did fix it
“it’s up to its citizens to change its course.”
We already did in November 2016.
None.
The only people despairing are liberals, NeverTrumpers, and illegals.
These were all person who previously did not have any despair, so, of course it seems like the whole world is, now, under Trump.
Go TRUMP!
More “them STOOOOOPID voters” tantrums from The Swamp.
Don't forget Peanut Farmer Carter. It was only 4 years of Jimmy Carter, but it was bad until President Reagan fixed things after the Carter disaster. Then we suffered 8 long years of misery with Obummer until President Trump came along to fix things up again. I cringe at the thought of hitlery if she got it, ugh.
As a Caucasian I feel racially harassed also. Everything is said to be my fault. Since the civil war my family has served in the military defending the Constitution. No American is not and never has been perfect. It never will be. From my point of view I see to many spoiled brats say they want everything now! They are unwilling to work for or sacrifice to improve life. They just Biatch.
It’s been a great year for real Americans.
Hilarious claptrap from communists.
It's a great place to be! There's jobs. People are happy. We're having fun! We're WINNING every day!

Inciting a riot invites burning the post presses
if there is no law, then there is no law
Looks like the libs are admitting that their multi-trillion dollar decades long war on poverty is a total failure. Time to do it our way. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. That will also clean up a lot of other social ills.
And the separated children should be reunited with their parents. Immediately. In their home countries.
