The Anti-Trump Right Has Become Trump’s Base
New York Magazine ^ | July 3, 2018 | Jonathan Chait

Last fall, the Pew Research Center released one of its periodic typologies of the American electorate, identifying the demographic and ideological fissures both within and between the two parties. The two most conservative factions within the Republican Party were familiar types. The first, and largest, “Core Conservatives,” holds doctrinaire positions on everything. This group is “financially comfortable,” and “overwhelmingly supports smaller government, lower corporate tax rates and believes in the fairness of the nation’s economic system,” and also “express[es] a positive view of U.S. involvement in the global economy.” This is the conservatism of Paul Ryan.

Another group, “Country First Conservatives,” is “older and less educated than other Republican-leaning typology groups,” and has more populist and isolationist views. They are “highly critical of immigrants and deeply wary of U.S. global involvement,” and most likely to believe “if America is too open to people from all over the world, we risk losing our identity as a nation.”

Which of these two groups do you think registered higher support for Donald Trump? The Country First Conservatives, right? Well, no. Ninety-three percent of Core Conservatives approved of Trump’s job performance, as opposed to 84 percent of Country First Conservatives. The most ideologically pure conservatives are Trumpier than the nativist and isolationist ones.

The waning months of the Republican primary campaign in 2016 devolved into a contest between Trump and the purity of conservative doctrine. Ted Cruz, the last candidate standing against Trump, represented the latter, and enjoyed the vocal support of most of the organized conservative movement. Cruz called Trump a “fake conservative.” Rick Perry had termed him a “a cancer on conservatism.” Trump’s presidency has driven home the surprising reality that Trump is conservatism....

The difference between the two may be the Country First group is not feeling that Trump is moving fast enough on his promises to build the wall, export illegals, etc.

This was expected. Many anti-Trumpers woke up and more each day are boarding the Trump Train.

Even liberal parts of my family are starting to comment ‘smart’ when it comes to Trump. Their movement toward the center is slow but it’s happening.

Oh yeah, the Ann Coulter crowd where you realize they are to stupid understand the forces in motion.

Instead of blaming Trump for not building the wall with his bare hands and a cement mixer, why don't you work on campaigns to get a majority conservative congress to AUTHORIZE and FUND it?!

A short bus full of peacocks in the spring rut.

It’s why we voted for him...

It's not why I voted for him.

I voted for him because he wasn't a simpering coward like the bulk of the Republican officeholders.

I freely admit Trump was not my first choice and I was concerned that his deportment would hamper him and truthfully I wasn't sure that he wouldn't get bored and not take the office seriously. I was wrong he has in many ways channeled Andy Jackson and does pretty much what he believes is RIGHT and lets the cards fall where they may. GOOD for him and GOOD for America. But I agree that he hasn't moved fast enough on the border he should have by now give the job of border security over to the military the Corp of Engineers should be there with shovels and bulldozers and the wall should be well on its way. Troops from Europe should be back home and with the money to house and feed them going into our economy. He should be pushing pushing pushing that the border is a national security matter that makes it a Presidential matter and every one needs to butt OUT. Who knows how many hundreds of very bad people have already come across. If he was to push this aspect of the border who could stand in his way?

It’s more than that. Have you heard of the #Walkaway movement? It was started by a leftist GAY guy who is leaving the Democrap party to support Trump he got so fed up of the radical insanity. I couldn’t believe it, and every day it’s more and more people, even TRANNYS are leaving!! That’s incredible to me, of all people THEY are leaving? The Democrap party has reached a level of now being too radical for even them, so if gays and trannys are leaving imagine what the average democrat is doing as well. Check out their Facebook page, black people, even people with Mexican heritage are leaving. The Democrap party is TOAST..........

They are “highly critical of immigrants and deeply wary of U.S. global involvement,”

I am truly sick, I mean sick, of the Liberal highjacking of the word "immigrant". I am an immigrant, and up til now, I never had to justify that I am an American by having to stress legal immigrant. How many good words are we going to let the libs steal? Yes, I know, it's their Alinsky crap.

To be clear...I'm not blaming Trump. I'm only offering a possible suggestion for the difference in the two polls.

I'm doing my best to get people to vote in November as we need to hold the House and gain seats in the Senate.

And Schumer is attacked for not sticking up for that monster called Maxine.

Midterms will be a bloodbath. I expect actual blood to be shed.

Every republican, independent, and woke democrat with any sense must get to the polls AND TAKE TEN OTHER PEOPLE to vote out the leftist scum.

Today’s Democrats look like the mid 1980’s leftists who took on Reagan and Thatcher in Europe. They’re motto is “burn the whole thing down.” 30 years later and they still haven’t grasped the fact that they are and always have been useful idiots.
