Legally Armed Teachers Explain Why They Carry Guns in Their Schools ( Colorado )
Free Beacon ^ | July 8, 2018 | Stephen Gutowski

'Why do teachers have to die protecting their students? Why can't we live protecting our students?'

In the weeks and months since the school shootings in Parkland, Florida, and Santa Fe, Texas, the debate over whether teachers should be able to carry firearms in schools has received a great deal of attention. A number of states have allowed teachers to carry firearms in schools for years and provide some insight into how such programs work in practice and what motivates teachers who want to be armed.

In Colorado, local school districts have the authority to but are not required to allow teachers within their schools to carry firearms as part of the district's security plan. Teachers are never forced to carry a gun and those who want to carry are subject to additional background screenings, psychological screens, as well as emergency medical and firearms training, the details of which are decided on by their local school board.

...

Michael, a middle school technology teacher who asked his last name not be disclosed because his school district does not reveal which teachers are allowed to carry guns, has been carrying in his school for three years.

...

the thing that ultimately decided is I want the kids to have a chance and I want to have a chance.

...

I want to have that chance to protect my kids.

...

say one hundred teachers in our building, just because 98 of them are terrified of guns, don't like guns, have never seen guns, a lot of decisions are being driven by the fact that those 98% are like that, and I said well what about the rest of us? What about us?

“They have to explain???”

Even if an author tries not to interject bias, the viewpoint from which they write speaks volumes.

We have two granddaughters who are teachers and both of them “carry”, they have been well instructed and shoot well above average. Hopefully they will never have to prove their skills in the use of firearms in the classroom or anywhere else..

I know of two school administrators and several teachers who carry weapons on their person during the school day at a local primary school. Too many crazies out there not to.

The money quote:

“...the thing that ultimately decided is I want the kids to have a chance and I want to have a chance. If I’m going to throw myself out there anyways, I would like to have something to have a chance to shoot back. Did I ever want to? You know you never want to, but you want to be able to.”

Exactly.

Schools need metal detectors. My daughter teaches kindergarten and had a student stab another student this year.

I have never met a public school teacher, in Maine, that i would trust with a loaded gun.

"FASTER" has received some great reviews!

There are other superb training classes available in Colorado.

I'm attending a 16 hr. course this weekend.

I am of the opinion that all teachers need to be trained on how to make a firearm safe plus received first aid training.

[sarc]

I understand your daughter being frustrated with the kids but having one student stab another is an extreme form of punishment.

Thanks, george76.

Forwarding on to my retired brother who taught Industrial Arts at Lincoln HS in Denver. Now he lives on the Western slope and teaches CC at his own range.

Just remember the 5 rules of a gun fight:

1) gun beats no gun
2) fast beats slow
3) a hit beats a miss
4) big holes beat little holes
5) two holes beat one hole

Very funny but teaching in public schools today is very dangerous.students can grab anything and use it as a weapon when frustrated.

I agree 100%

It is dangerous and the school districts / administration are so scared of lawsuits that they do not want to kick out disruptive kids. That puts the teachers in a dangerous situation with all the responsibility but none of the authority.

If one of these teachers ever stops a shooter the left will go insane (more than they already have).
