China 'shocked' by US actions in trade dispute
BBC ^ | July 11, 2018

China said it is "shocked" after the US announced plans for fresh tariffs, escalating a trade war between the two countries.

The US listed $200bn (£150bn) worth of additional products it intends to place tariffs on as soon as September.

The move comes just days after the two countries imposed tit-for-tat tariffs of $34bn on each other's goods.

Beijing described Washington's latest threat as "totally unacceptable," saying it would harm the world.

"The behaviour of the US is hurting China, hurting the world and hurting itself," a spokesperson for China's commerce ministry said in a statement.

The spokesperson also said the government would have to take the "necessary counter-measures".

The list names more than 6,000 items including food products, minerals and consumer goods such as handbags.

The public will have until the end of August to comment on the list before the new tariffs - to be imposed at 10% - come into effect.

Harm the world? BS. It will harm their world. They have been on the gravy train far too long. Things need to be evened up a little.

Same with the globohomos on FR. They are disappointed that the huge and unfair trade imbalance is being rectified.

“It’s a difficult situation for a number of our companies. They’re getting increasingly worried about where this is all going,” Ed Brzytwa, director of international trade for the American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical companies, told the BBC on Tuesday before the latest measures were announced.

“They can’t figure out what the endgame is.”

Any business importing from China is insane if they do not IMMEDIATELY plan to move toward alternate suppliers. Domestic American manufacturing is rapidly growing now.

Why is it only US tariffs are bad, but the rest of the world gets a pass?

The Chinese cannot be “shocked” at any news. They have total cyberattack hacking underway 24/7.

Amazingly at the mid-size university I worked for IT staff member told me they get “hundreds” of hacking attack attempts from China every DAY! He said what must it be like for places like U. of Michigan or others in the state of MI. We didn’t even have any secret corporate or defense research like U of Michigan.

Also, the Chinese students,I am told, are often spies deliberately sent to transfer information. Idea: a place that uses a subcontractor and gets research from the university could have passwords and account information to the corporation or bigger place the Chinese are really after.

They’re trying to play tough guy but the problem for them is they have a giant trade surplus with the US. Trump can hit them much much harder than they can hit back and they know it. If he isn’t bluffing.....which I’m confident he’s not, they’re going to have to buckle and negotiate a much more balanced trade agreement or their exports are going to take it right in the shorts. They’re going to learn it is much easier to find more suppliers willing to sell you stuff than it is finding new customers to buy your stuff.

Welcome to the party Xi.

Remember when Mr. Trump turned to Ted Cruz in one of the many debates after Cruz had given the standard uniparty free trade answer on dealing with our crappy trade deals - Mr. Trump said Ted that will take way to long and explained his strategy.

Looks like president Trump is implementing exactly what he told Senator Cruz. A president who keeps his word and puts American's first. Go Trump Go!

I, for one, am tired of seeing familiar American brand goods made in China.
The Chinese didn’t do this. American manufacturers did.

“The Chinese didn’t do this. American manufacturers did.”

True. But to be fair they were playing by the current laws, rules, and regulations in order to stay competitive.

But there’s a new Sheriff in town, thank God.

PC maybe? If Trump negotiates a better trade agreement, the Chinese might call us racists.
