Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine.

Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.

The European Union in Brussels called the sudden cut-off to some of its member countries 'completely unacceptable'.

No gas out, no Euros in to Russia. This won’t last long. But it’s a tough lesson of depending on Russia for a vital need.

Ukraine was syphoning off gas from the pipelines passing through Ukraine and refused all efforts to negotiate a solution.
There was no way to stop Ukraines theft and deliver to Europe. This is why the north stream line was first conceived. You have to bypass Ukraine.

Germany remembers what happens when you depend on a pipeline through a corrupt cesspool like Ukraine that steals Russia gas and doesnt pay its Gazprom bills

Hence Nordstream

Go to your favorite search engine and look up why that happened in '09. Interesting story not as simple as, "Russia cut them off for the Hell of it".

Ukraine wasn't paying because they tap the same pipeline for their internal use and figured Russia would never halt shipments because they had pilfered a few percent for years and Russian never shut down shipments. Russia did shut the gas off so the EU would put pressure on Ukraine to pay up and to stop stealing so much that to get a million CF out on the Europe end they had to put about 105% of that in on the Russia end. Yeah, Ukraine was up to pilfering about five percent of the flow right off the top, reselling it, and not paying their bill to boot.

'09 is exactly why Russia and Germany built a bypass to Ukraine in the Baltic and are now building another. Germany wants what it pays for whether Ukraine pays or not and without Ukraine stealing so much it drives the price up. If Ukraine had been content with pilfering a percent or two and paid their bills, there would have never been the first alternative route.

Not only that but there a mysterious explosion on the coldest day of the year in Republic of Georgia that cut their heat off.

Lithuania had some public figure speak out against Russia or something, and oh, I think the next day - A mysterious fire took down their something...something that was related to heat and imports of petroleum. Sorry not that good at this stuff.

These things happened around the same time. I am generally pro-Russia here but there is no doubt that Putin is a bully and I was certain these things happened without mystery.
