Slavery: What They Didn't Teach in My High School
townhall.com ^ | 7/12/2018 | Larry Elder

A man I have known since grade school changed his name, years ago, to an Arabic one. He told me he rejected Christianity as "the white man's religion that justified slavery." He argued Africans taken out of that continent were owed reparations. "From whom?" I asked.

Arab slavers took more Africans out of Africa and transported them to the Middle East and to South America than European slavers took out of Africa and brought to North America. Arab slavers began taking slaves out of Africa beginning in the ninth century -- centuries before the European slave trade -- and continued well after.

In "Prisons & Slavery," John Dewar Gleissner writes: "The Arabs' treatment of black Africans can aptly be termed an African Holocaust. Arabs killed more Africans in transit, especially when crossing the Sahara Desert, than Europeans and Americans, and over more centuries, both before and after the years of the Atlantic slave trade. Arab Muslims began extracting millions of black African slaves centuries before Christian nations did. Arab slave traders removed slaves from Africa for about 13 centuries, compared to three centuries of the Atlantic slave trade. African slaves transported by Arabs across the Sahara Desert died more often than slaves making the Middle Passage to the New World by ship. Slaves invariably died within five years if they worked in the Ottoman Empire's Sahara salt mines."

All true but try to convince certain people of those facts. Pfffttt! White europeans are the bane of the earth and responsible for anything and everything bad that's ever happened. Or will happen. Thank you Mr. Elder. Few if any places of "education" will bring any of this up.

Muslim Arabs from what is now Algeria routinely raided southern France for female slaves. Muslim Turks and Tatars did the same in southern Russia. The practice continued well into the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Are the modern French and Russians owed reparations?

I didn’t find out until three years ago our Native Americans were often targeted by Europeans for the slave trade. All I had ever been taught was that evil Southern men took blacks out of Africa to work in the fields of the plantations. I was in a third grade classroom and the teacher- an AA woman- was reading the story of Squanto, an Indian who had survived being captured and sold into slavery. To this teachers’ credit- one of her AA students told her they thought that only blacks were made slaves in the South. She told them no, Africans weren’t the only ones sold as slaves, and in some ways slavery exits to this day.

The Africans taken out of Africa are all long dead.

Those who removed them are all long dead.

The heirs of slaves that were not slaves have no standing to demand anything from those who never owned slaves themselves.

These reparations clowns need to be told to shove off in no uncertain terms.

I thought Squanto was the Indian who taught the Pilgrims to fertilize their fields with fish, and later joined them in their first Thanksgiving celebration.

I’ve heard of Indians who were slaveowners but never as slaves.

As I understand it was African Muslim tribes that captured other Africans, non-Muslim Africans, and sold them to slavers for transport to the Americas.

Obama’s ancestors were African Muslim slave traders - not slaves. Try teaching that in American schools.

I was taught as a youngster (pre-PC days) that Squanto spoke English because he had been captured and sold into slavery, eventually obtaining his freedom and returning to Massachusetts.

Squanto’s tribe had disappeared and he was held captive by other suspicious natives. He was so willing to help the Pilgrims because they treated him better.

The problem is, of course, that European societies and certain spin-off nations have been too successful— too innovative, wealthy, powerful, with a higher standard of living— relative to any other societies or cultures in the history of mankind. They control the world’s economy, and when they go to war, it involves the world. It’s human nature for the have-nots to envy and try to take from the haves— their wealth, their power, their glory.... Just people being people, and using race as a justification in this case.

Excellent points, all. But I actually would be supportive of reparations in at least one circumstance: where it can be proven that a family’s wealth can be reliably traced back to their owning slaves and the descendents of said slaves could be reliably identified. In that circumstance I would be 100% supportive of wealth being seized from those who profited from slavery and given to those whose wealth was extracted by slavery. I honestly think this would be rare. But blanket reparations from (only) white people regardless of lineage and to African Americans regardless of lineage? Absurd.

Then we should start spreading the word. Forwarding the article where and to whom we should.

When all the blacks whose ancestors owned slaves pony up for reparations, I’ll think about it.

More than just the French were raided for slaves. So was commerce on the high seas. Here is a link to a very interesting story about one such slave taken who led a rebellion. He also happens to be in my family tree-- an honor I share with Zachary Taylor, Rutherford B. Hayes and JFK.

France eventually colonized Algeria to stop this kind of $#*+ and now the Muslims are entitled to colonize France in retribution?

I’m 100% for this. Absolutely. Reparations from those who profited from slavery regardless of pigmentation to those who were hurt by slavery regardless of pigmentation.

American Indians made very poor slaves, so they were only used as slaves by other Indians. Certain Indian groups also kept Black slaves.

Not even then.

As Kipling observed, never pay the Dane Geld no matter how trivial the cost may be.

Once you do the Danes never go away.

Do you think paying reparations once would work? Realize that the aggrieved entity isn’t a person but an entity, an abstraction of persons, and persons through that entity claim vicarious suffering and attribute to others vicarious guilt.

The entity doesn’t die just because you pay off some persons. Other persons will come up after them who will have the exact same grievances, the exact same attitudes and the exact same vicarious suffering ... just as they will engage in similar corruptions of blood to demand their reparations in turn. It can never end because the abstraction of persons, the entity, can never forgive or be sated ... and no one can ever forgive on its behalf because anyone can claim its injuries with ease.

So screw them all. They deserve nothing and none deserve to be made to pay them off.

Reparations to those who didn’t personally endure, from those who didn’t injure, are to justice what amnesties are to sound border policy.

The non-Irish part, sure.

As for the Irish part I’m content if the non-Irish part wants all of him. They can have his Commie relatives who are Irish as well.
