Macron Denies Trump Claim That NATO Allies Agreed to Increase Spending Beyond Goals

President Donald Trump on Thursday said NATO allies agreed to “substantially up their commitment” to the alliance after he told leaders he was “extremely unhappy.”

“Tremendous progress has been made. Everyone’s agreed to substantially up their commitment. They’re going to up it at levels that they’ve never thought of before,” Trump said at his press conference in Brussels.

“Commitments were made,” he said. “The commitment was at 2 percent, ultimately that’ll be going up quite a bit higher than that.”

French President Emmanuel Macron denied that any NATO members had agreed to boost contributions beyond 2 percent GDP.

“There is a communique that was published yesterday. It’s very detailed,” Macron said, per the Associated Press. “It confirms the goal of 2 percent by 2024. That’s all.”

Macron also denied reports that Trump had threatened to withdraw from the NATO alliance.

Screw ‘em. If they’re supposed to be paying 5% and they’re paying 2%, reduce our forces in Europe by 60% and tell them we’ll think about bringing them back when the numbers match.

Trump said our “allies” agreed.

Doesn’t always include France.

Resolved.

Next time Germany invades France they can have it. The European Union is effectively the German Union already.

Our problems are here, not in Europe. We should leave NATO.

The 2% commitment is "by 2024". It isn't committed for the current year. They will do nothing until 2024, then fail to live up to the agreement anyway.

RE: The European Union is effectively the German Union already.

Germany dumps its nuclear energy program and then IMPORTs electricity from France ( generated by nuclear power of course ).

” we’ll think about bringing them back when the numbers match.”

The German navy is mostly in port for repairs. Last I heard, they had no deployed submarines. Their army doesn’t have supplies for a thirty day maximum effort deployment. (How many emergencies last only 30 days?)

Britain has ships that don’t work when the weather is too warm; like in the Persian Gulf.

You can have a world class military of socialism. You can’t have both.

Macron,May and Merkel just don’t get it. Trump is not operating in a political vacuum. There no longer exists in the United States a general consensus that America should be ready to sacrifice blood and treasure on behalf of Western Europe. Their unwillingness to defend their own borders and indifference to preserving their cultural heritage has not been lost on Americans. They and the US,truth be told and despite the globalists, would actually be better off without NATO. Its time has passed.

They are all in arrears, so “2% + arrears” is a lot of prior, unmet, 2 percents.

Euro leaders “agreement”, let alone assent, is not required by Trump. He told them what it will be, and so it shall be.

I support the immediate abandoning of NATO unless someone can tell us what its meaningful purpose in light of the german / Russian alliance on natural gas where Merkle actually took kick backs. Not only Merkle, but other corrupt German officials profited from the deal which supplies over 70% of that energy to Germany FROM RUSSIA. The Germans are quite comfortable with Russia— clearly. For what purpose are we spending billions on nato? It cant be terrorism because those countries allow themselves to be flooded with terrorists every day. Can anyone help answer this simple question? I think our President has been far too polite in light of these irrefutable facts . Get the hell out of nato. Build the wall .
