President Trump claimed Friday ahead of his summit with Vladimir Putin that the Russian president would not have invaded Crimea had he been in office, calling the globally condemned annexation an Obama disaster.
The comments marked Trump's latest attempt to set the stage for his meeting with Putin, with a combination of tough talk and suggestions of future improved ties.
I think we could have a very good relationship with President Putin, Trump said, adding that he was not going into the meeting with high expectations. Well see.
Trump tackled questions about Russia during a joint press conference outside London with British Prime Minister Theresa May. He used the forum to again blast the rigged witch hunt, his term for Special Counsel Robert Muellers investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates in the 2016 presidential election, saying it "hurts U.S. and Russian relations.
But he made the claim about Crimea in response to a question from Fox News John Roberts on how relations could be improved while Putin continues to illegally occupy the region.
I dont think he would have done that if I were president, Trump responded. He took over Crimea during the Obama administration. This was an Obama disaster, and if I were president then, he would not have taken over Crimea.
Crimea was annexed from Ukraine by Putin in 2014.

The truth hurts, Ms. Rice.
Gee, how does one say such things if one is conspiring with the Rooskies? Hmmmmmm.
Trump gets much enjoyment and milage out of beating up on Obama when he is defenseless. That is a great way tho remove the Obama embarrasment from History.
Trump knows full well that Crimea is Russia and that fact is not going to change. However, Ukraine will remain Ukraine.
They see me trolling, they hatin
What was it Obama said to Putin’s foreign secretary when he thought the mic was off: “wait till after the election; I’ll be able to be more flexible”.
ON THE OTHER HAND fellow Conservatives and fellow Trump voters, I do not believe the U.S. was, under any president, going to go to war with Russia over Crimea. The public post-Iraq and ongoing Afghan war fatigue was just not going to accept it.
Yes, for sure Obama was weak in how he reacted to Putin taking Crimea, as the U.S. and the EU and Nato did 100 times too little, short of going to war. But “preventing” it? I seriusly beieve that part of Trump’s comments is not what would have been realistic under any U.S. leader.
You’re right. Crimea has been historically Russian. The main point of Trump’s criticism: It STINGS! They can deny, question motives and destructiveness. Heh heh.
Nuland, McCain and Soros overthrew the elected govt of Ukraine. That would not have happened under Trump.
Yes, 0bama was a weak sister and yes, more could have and should have been done short of war.
In foreign relations 0bama was good at cozying up to Muslims but not much else, in my view.
If Obama and McCain didn’t support the coup in Ukraine Crimea would still be part of Ukraine.
Trump doesnt get played. Putin and the rest of the Russian scum know Trump is not to be played.
I don’t think Trump would have been able to prevent it, but its still a good talking point. Crimea has been Russian for 350 years and access to the Black Sea has been in their strategic DNA since the 1600s. It was only through a quirk of Soviet politics it was handed to Ukraine anyway.
BUT - Obama and his clown-show created and contributed to the pretext Putin needed to grab Crimea. They destabilized Ukraine, which never was a truly independent nation anyway, and gave Putin all the domestic cover he needed to act.
The Chinese, the Russians, the Iranians all knew - Obama, the media hologram candidate, was a spineless fool. China grabbed the South China Sea islands for the same reason.
Support Free Republic, Folks!
Obama and Putin share the goal of the destruction of America.
Trump will focus on nuclear non-proliferation.
In this, his focus will be on ensuring Russian doesn’t help Iran or others produce nuclear weapons.
Putin will seek to undermine America’s nuclear capability and will fail.
A day doesn’t go by that I don’t thank God for Trump crushing the beast in 2016. A different result would have been cataclysmic for this country. Not since Reagan has this country had a leader who loves it.
Well said, Bump!
True that. And Trumps point re Germany and the pipeline is how will they oppose future Russian aggression when threatened with a very cold winter.
>96% of Crimeans voted to rejoin Russia. Not an invasion. Trump shouldn’t buy false narratives.
