KOBANI, Syria – As the battle for the northwestern Syrian city of Afrin raged earlier this year, amid Turkey’s eventually successful “Operation Olive Branch” to seize control from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), images of the bloodbath flooded social media.
But there was one especially shocking video, captured via cellphone, that ignited international outcry: a fighter with the all-female Kurdish unit known as the YPJ lay dead and half-naked in the dirt, her body mutilated with deep cuts lacerating her exposed breasts. Turkey-backed Syrian rebel fighters in military fatigues can be seen swarming the corpse, groping the pockets of her jeans.
Barin Kobani and her brother Ahmed, who saw the graphic video online before learning that it was his younger sister.
“She’s beautiful, man,” declares one fighter as one purports to take a selfie with the defiled body. In Arabic, others declare “God is Great,” while some call the downed soldier a “female pig.” One even digs his dirty boot into her chest, and another puts the muzzle of his rifle at her head.
“I was checking Facebook and I came across the video and was in shock; it was so awful that I had no words,” Ahmed, 31, told Fox News. “I didn’t know who the girl was... and then a commentator wrote it was Barin Kobani.”
In desperation, he called around hoping it was someone else with the same name. But within hours, SDF officials confirmed Ahmed’s worst nightmare. In agony, he delivered the news to the family. They believed Barin, 27, was killed on February 3 fighting in a village outside Afrin, but the footage did not surface on the Internet until several days later.

Syrian Kurdish forces are still present in the Afrin (Efrin) area. Every week some of the Turkish supported Islamist militia members, who are committing these atrocities, are killed. That will not end either, until it is over.

I will say this. At least they went down swinging. They would have mutilated any females that fell into their “tender hands”

This is NATO.
This is Turkey’s Sunni Islamist Militias and ISIS.
I have no control of NATO membership. That issue will eventually come to a head.
The video and the victim and her mutilation is a fact.
I first saw it in February, right after it happened.
It did not stay on Twitter very long. The original source site I had is not working. I have no desire to look at it again. There was more than 1 video. One of the culprits in the original video was identified very soon after it happened. I’ve not heard him mentioned again. Have not heard if he is still alive either.
We must feel very sorry for the family. I have friends in Syria who knew her.
The article stated that they were. But it must be very painful to think about this.
I suspect FB allows International users to view stuff they edit for the US sensitivities. (Hide stuff they can’t control the narrative on)
ISIS learned to fear the YPJ. They were the primary defenders of Kobani. Many were killed. But with US air support they held the city. Largely women and young girls.
I think this was the night the B1-B’s came calling on ISIS in Kobani. It left an impression.

Atrocities like this are not forgotten easily. Often such actions keep enmity burning through generations - even centuries.
This one survivor is almost certain to impress this story on his children and grandchildren. So many stories like this, across so many in the community, ensure that it will be a strong lesson in their culture, long after perpetrators are dead and gone.
Yes. agree.
It should not cripple a nation to the point of having no resolution or future. But it must not go unpunished.
The Middle East is riddled with them. Especially from Turkey and the Ottoman Empire.
