N.H. Supreme Court upholds constitutionality of voter residency bill

A fiercely contested bill to make residency a condition of voting in New Hampshire was determined by the state Supreme Court to be constitutional Thursday, in a major ruling that clears its approval by Gov. Chris Sununu.

In a 3-2 ruling, the court found that the bill, House Bill 1264, is not a burden on the right to vote, but rather a means to better organize state laws “in order to place voters and residents on equal footing as New Hampshire citizens.”

The court’s decision, which came without warning, now sets up a high-stakes choice for Sununu. On Thursday afternoon, hours after the court weighed in, the bill passed from Senate President Chuck Morse’s desk over to the governor’s office. That set in motion a constitutionally mandated five-day countdown; Sununu must decide by Tuesday whether to veto, sign or let pass without signature a law he has taken varying positions on in the last seven months.

In a terse statement Thursday, Sununu declined to show his cards.

Over the years, thousands of non-resident students and bus loads of dems have gone over the NH border and voted in NH in primaries and in Presidential elections, because until this bill, you only had to SAY you PLANNED to domicile in NH to be able to sign up and vote same day.

The 2016 vote could have added 4 more electoral votes for DJT and Senator Ayotte could have retained her seat if this new electoral law had been in force.

Hillary stole this state in college towns like Keene. A few thousand votes can swing this state easily. This is a sane law that should be signed in a flash.

Why in God’s name would Governor Sununu have any reservations of signing this legislation into law?

When I was a college student, in New Hampshire, as an out of stater, I and other like me, could ONLY vote in our home states, by absentee ballots...NOT in New Hampshire! So this is not a “new” nor crazy idea, considering the fact that it is well known that now anyone is allowed ( even bused in people, who vote there and also in their home states! ) to cast votes there, thus diluting the state voters’ votes.

you need to show a NH license, or car insurance registered in state, or state ID, etc., now, to vote same day.. in effect 2019, if signed.. hopefully not the bogus ‘utilities bill’ proof...

The Massachusetts Libs have been messing up the New Hampshire voting for decades! It’s about time that changed!

I hope and pray that this passes!

Back, before the FLOOD, when I was in college, you had to prove that you were a REGISTERED, IN STATE voter, to vote in N.H.! Being a student did NOT count and people weren't bused in!

Massachussetts has been the “Hub of Liberal $hit Distribution” for fifty years. The next wall Trump needs to commission is around this $hit hole State!

I don’t know how liberal N.H. state lawmakers are, so I cannot say that repealing the 16th and ill-conceived 17th Amendments would ultimately make N.H. citizens better off, but that’s the idea.

I admit I don’t know the details, but I hope it does not impact the military’personnels’ right to vote in their previous stateside residence.

College students live with their parents in THEIR home. A college dorm or apartment is NOT HOME.

Time for people to grow up and get sane again.
