I live in Maryland, although in a red area. I’ve never had a negative comment. Plenty of positive ones.
Here in the People’s Republic of Socialist Delaware, I wear my hat openly and without fear. Only ONE a$$hole made a negative comment. Blacks and whits, male and female, young and old - all positive comments.

I am the last person who wants to see the initial deaths of a new civil war. However, like the Sgt-Major said in the movie We Were Soldiers, "Gentlemen prepare to defend yourselves!" Yes, it was a movie, but these Antifa types are organizing and have already attacked Trump supporters and will continue to grow if not countered in some way that hurts. It's obvious that local LE no longer wants to confront them. Look at how LE backs away from riots.
Legal thought: In most jurisdictions the threat of Assault (if just words or menacing actions) gives a person the right to defend themselves if they think their life or limb is in jeopardy. ALWAYS use that term if confronted by LE. Then shut up.
It's past time to defend ourselves against these threats of assault, not to mention actual physical battery that has happened will continue.

Haha if you're joking. Pepper spray is the least deterrent in a conflict. Many LE agencies have given it up for tasers. See my post above about stun guns and tasers.
Not easy but the point is we can’t just cower in fear. Strength in numbers and they would be less likely to pull the hat off someone like they do if 100 more red hats were in the area.
Make them panic as panicked people make more mistakes.
