EU prepared to hit back on proposed US auto tariffs

The European Union says it is already preparing measures to retaliate against the United States if President Donald Trump puts tariffs on imported cars and auto parts.

The auto industry is a big employer and exporter in Europe, and the new tariffs could hit the region hard, as well as consumers and manufacturers in the U.S., where prices would rise.

...snip

For Europe, there is a lot at stake as companies like BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, and Fiat Chrysler send $46.6 billion worth of vehicles every year to the U.S. Some 13.3 million people, or 6.1 percent of the employed population of the EU, work in the automotive sector, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

The EU has, according to the Bloomberg article I was just reviewing, somewhere around 10% import tariffs on autos.

So we should charge about 10% on European autos.

Unless of course, they are reducing their tariffs.

Which is, the point.

They could lower their tariffs and Trump will lower ours.

Fine, no more Beemers or VWs or whatever here, completely fine. Make US auto manufacturers come up with comparable vehicles instead of the plastic and aluminum junk that falls apart before its first oil change.

Seeing as the 18 largest cargo ships create more pollution than all the cars in the world put together I’d rather see more countries producing goods closer to home instead of shipping them out around the planet. Just call me an environmental wacko I guess

Well, they have the best interests in heart for quite a few FReepers who wish to prolong the obscene trade imbalances with other countries and hope President Trump doesn't fight back.

I say let’s play this out to it’s natural conclusion. The U.S stops trading with E.U and vise versa. I think it would suck but ultimately everyone would be fine. BMW can sell to Spaniards and the Portuguese instead. Sure that would cut them down to size a bit but that’s fine, in the end.

The EU is not listening to German auto makers. They told Merkel the EU tarrifs on U.S. cars should be dropped to the lower 10% tarrif on EU cars sent to the U.S. The EU tarrif is 25%, or 250% of the U.S. tarrif.

The EU was formed to be a super power...

It becomes more obvious in these times.Maybe it's time to remove our troops and...as NATO members...use their own resources for their defense.

The president is trying to get a even playing field for America when it trades goods with EU countries. I understand the EU whining but American politicians should be supporting the president, not whining like the EU. We finally have a president who is putting the American people first
. The elitist scum hate him for it.

Mea culpa.

I had my tarrif %’s wrong in a prior post.

EU tarrifs on U.S. cars is 10%, while the U.S. tarrif on cars from the EU is 2.5% - a 400% difference (U.S. 400% lower than the EU tarrif on cars).

EU cars are already among the most expensive in the U.S. If the U.S. raises its tarrifs on EU cars to match the EU tarrif, more EU car manufancrturing will shift to the U.S.

And U.S. cars imported to the EU? It’s small compared to U.S. car exports to the EU.

The loser would be the EU, losing car exports to the U.S. and seeing more EU cars manufactured in the U.S.

The EU is writing checks that their body cannot cash. Perhaps it is time to humiliate them for being the two-faced, ungrateful, grifters that they are.

The loser would not be 27 of the 28 EU countries....the loser would be Germany (period).

When the EU wraps up this ‘hit back’....Trump will toss up another tariff, which likely only hurts Germany (not the other 27).

The EU will react by late fall, with another tariff on the US, and Trump will react with yet another tariff solely upon Germany.

No one realizes it, but this is almost a coordinated effort by France, Trump and most of the EU to downsize German economics. By spring of 2019...it’ll be obvious.
