What Liberals (Still) Get Wrong About Trump's Support
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 7-24-2018 | Henry Olsen

After each outrage, progressives believe supporters will drain away. On the contrary: he is giving them what they want

Liberals and progressives are forever predicting Donald Trump’s political demise. After each purported outrage – Charlottesville, separating children from their immigrant parents, now Helsinki – they confidently contend that this latest event will finally force Trump’s supporters to abandon him. Yet not only does this not happen, Trump’s support has actually risen by 6% since late 2017. How do they keep getting it so wrong?

To quote Ronald Reagan: “The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.” They presume that because Trump is so unconventional in style, his coalition must be equally unconventional. But it’s not. The data clearly shows that Trump’s political coalition is pretty much the traditional Republican coalition. And the often virulent behavior of anti-Trump partisans has made partisan Republicans especially unwilling to abandon their leader even when he stumbles.

The sheer ordinariness of Trump’s coalition is impossible to overstate. Data from the Voter Study Group show that more than 80% of his votes came from men and women who voted for Republican nominee Mitt Romney just four years before. This group contains the usual suspects among American Republicans: tax-cut advocates, religious evangelicals and Catholics, gun rights supporters and business types eager for deregulation. Trump has made sure to give each faction what they most desire just like any good politician would. That keeps them in his camp even as the media flays him with each supposed transgression.

Evangelicals are a case in point. My work on Republican factions, contained in the book I co-authored with Professor Dante Scala, The Four Faces of the Republican Party, found that very conservative voters who highly value

Interesting. “Data from the Voter Study Group show that more than 80% of his votes came from men and women who voted for Republican nominee Mitt Romney just four years before.”

That means 20% are people who didn’t vote for Romney (who sucks, bad). That’s where the story is.

Thanks, blam.

I am confident that the base is fully aware of how critical the situation is and will be more fired up this Nov. than they were Nov., 2016.

“They presume that because Trump is so unconventional in style, his coalition must be equally unconventional”

Even this a$$hole doesn't get it! Trump isn't unconventional. Unconventional is what we've been treated to by both the RATs and the RINOs for probably 50 years, with RR’s tenure being an exception. Trump personifies what the Founding Fathers were crafting with the formation of our government. It's “modern day politicians” who have bastardized our government in order to make a buck for themselves. Just think where we would be today had Trump followed Reagan! No Clingons, no Booshes, no illegal alien, Jug-eared Black criminals.

A book titled: The “Great Revolt” has interviews with Trump voters. There are many people who think the media is a big joke. There is big money from political advertisements both right wing and left. The voters will be influenced by levels of hatred toward both sides.

One does not have to like Trump personally (I don’t) to support him. He’s getting things accomplished. When I voted for him I wanted it to accomplish two things:

1. I wanted Hillary defeated.
2. I wanted a conservative in Antonin Scalia’s seat.

I got both those things. But we’re getting a lot of gravy on top of that. I’m pretty darn happy with winning.

Even if he were ten times as flawed as he is, we would have to stick with Trump to the end.

The Left has shown its hand. Should they ever take power again they have the Gulag planned for all of us.

Desperate, hysterical talking heads can’t touch him, especially when the things he does keep getting it so right. Who cares what he says?

Trump supporters who follow news at all cannot escape the daily blast of negativity. This has, predictably, hardened the attitudes of many Trump supporters. As minor issues are blown up into major catastrophes, it’s not surprising that potentially major issues ...get overlooked. It’s “boy who cried wolf” syndrome writ large; when the media cries “wolf” at every passing shadow, many Trump backers simply don’t believe them...

He's right on this one part...of course it's not the only reason we don't trust the press but 'crying wolf on everything' is ONE of the reasons. One out of about 15...

They still can’t wrap their heads around the fact that middle America realized just how sold-out they’ve been by both parties and then came along a man that loves his country, his fellow Americans, and could do something about it.

The over-the-top rhetoric they engaged in during the election process exposed them all and DROVE people TO him. These idiots really believe that more of the same will drive people away from him. It’s the definition of insanity. The opposite is happening, they’re continuing to turn people toward PDJT.

Talk about living in a bubble...they’re going to hate November.

What the Guardian really does not understand is that those whom it refers to as "liberals," simply aren't.

"Liberal" or "Mipip"

“Talk about living in a bubble...they’re going to hate November.”

Yes, this November’s election is Step #2 in the rebirthing of our country. And Step #3 will be the 2020 re-election of Donald Trump and the further replacement of RINOs and RATs with what will hopefully be patriotic citizens of the same bent and the President!

Well said!

One thing that Trump has done to his eternal credit is EXPOSE the fraud that is the MSM to the public.

In just about every single case these "mole-hills" that the press goes ape-crap over turn out to be nothing.
