U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions came to Boston yesterday to throw a spotlight on what he called “theft from America” by 25 mostly illegal immigrants charged with massive government fraud that’s being blamed on shoddy oversight by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
“Operation Double Trouble” accounted for $200,000 in heisted Medicare, unemployment and public housing benefits. One of the suspects, the feds said, is a convicted killer who escaped from prison in Puerto Rico.
“Across this city and across America, teachers, truck drivers, construction workers are going to work and paying taxes that are being stolen from the public treasury by fraudsters and criminals,” Sessions said at a press conference held at the Seaport offices of U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling.
“These government programs are intended to help the poor, the elderly, American citizens — not those that are trespassing in the country,” he added. “This kind of fraud is a theft from our seniors, a theft from our taxpayers, and a theft from the needy — theft from America.”
Gov. Charlie Baker defended the RMV, saying the state has “significantly beefed up” the fraud unit and worked with Homeland Security on the case. He called catching the cheats “a high priority.” He also said the REAL ID program, which requires proof of citizenship, has been a big help.
Registrar Erin Deveney said in a statement the RMV has added “technology tools and enhanced training” to help spot fraud.

“They need to work more closely with state police and not let offenders walk out the door,” O’Connell told the Herald. “They also need to be more proactive in mining their own database to look for people who have stolen identifications.”
Court documents show one of the first stops made by the 25 accused identity thieves was the RMV to obtain a driver’s license once they had another person’s name, date of birth and Social Security number at their disposal.
Sessions said one of the victims learned his problems were just beginning when he applied for a government housing subsidy after Hurricane Maria wiped out his house in Puerto Rico last fall, “and was told he was already receiving (public housing benefits) 1,600 miles away in Massachusetts.”
By simply running an analytical comparison of Medicaid reimbursements issued in Massachusetts against the same data in Puerto Rico, Sessions and Lelling said investigators amassed 110 cases where recipients with identical names and Social Security numbers were issued checks in both locations, and sometimes on the same day. Lelling said the task force is chasing down more than 80 additional leads.
Lelling said most of the accused have prior criminal records, “including drug trafficking, forgery, armed robbery.”
And there is Jose Lopez Rosado, a U.S. citizen authorities said escaped a Puerto Rican prison in 1994 while serving a 40-year sentence for murder.
IIRC, Sessions proposed that retrieved money be used for the wall.
$200,000 doesn’t sound like much in the grand scheme of things.
I’m sure it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We will spend 10 times that to investigate and prosecute these people. And then give them welfare in jail.

I see it as a positive that he is using this “small” number, but tying it specifically to 25 certain illegals. Using this example might hit home with some people, who might not really think there is anything wrong with illegals being here.
It might be a way to help some MA liberals realize that this is going on in their own neighborhoods.

Just $200,000. Really? There’s probably at least $2,000,000 worth of fraudulently collected government benefits just within a one mile radius of my house.
Is this how Mexico will pay for the wall by allowing us to keep our own tax money to spend on the wall?

Sessions is noteworthy precisely for his complete unimpressiveness.

I certainly don’t have $200K in my bank account, but on a USA Govt. scale, that’s small potatoes. On that scale, it’s like talking about Seventeen Cents, all in old pennies. “Crumbs!”, as Nancy would say.
If the person was a serial fraudster, then fine, but why even release this info?
Were they committing other crimes, like child trafficking?
That's just the annual retirement cost for a traitor like Andrew McCabe or a criminal like Lois Lerner.
Sounds like another effort to distract and draw attention from bigger criminal enterprises.
American taxpayers are being ripped off while we are trying to make ends meet and pay the Obamacare tax so that these same crooks can get free stuff. This is not fair.
Make these government hacks pay for reimbursement on this. I guarantee this lazy BS will stop.
